Spain
Germany
Italy
Holland
France

Each tournament has a changing of the guard. I fully expect Germany and Italy to win their respective groups. I think Spain could be in trouble with Holland's young and very athletic team, complimented by Van Persie as a striker. Chile is a threat to be in the semi-finals.

I can see that they may have some "breakout" players (Clasie etc) but losing Strootman was a huge blow for them.

Cote de Ivory

It's Côte D'Ivoire

And for the most part it is written in French in most official FIFA literature. The fact that they go by the French name is even more a facet of neocolonialism. Germany doesn't become Deutschland in FIFA documents and media in the English language.

Most African nations are named after some colonial power's ridiculous claims about the land. Cameroon is named after the Portuguese who thought there were a bunch of shrimp (Cameraos) in nearby waters.

he wouldn't have got the ball

This has become a cliché when British old-timers talk about the lack of tackling like the old days when Leeds kicked the shite out of players.

The Laws of Game do not speak about getting to the ball when referring to getting carded for a tackle. Yellow cards are given for a "reckless challenge," or one in which the player goes in with no regard towards the safety of the opponent. Reds are given to players for "using excessive force," and is in danger of injuring an opponent.

This isn´t a FIFA thing. The country has officially decided to be called this, irrespective of the language of the interlocutor.

Van Gaal is going after them with pace. Strootman is a huge lose, for sure. It will be the most intriguing first group match of the entire tournament.

It's still dumb and an even worse hold over of neocolonialism. If they really wanted to prevent misnomers, Ivorians would give themselves a new national identity.

to watch that challenge and think it wasn't a red takes a special kind of bias. i'd have choked sterling out too. very lucky that challenge didn't snap his leg.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out for 10 days - 3 weeks.

So Roy has a decision to make about whether to keep him in the team, to me its a no brainer and he stays.
1) It just confirms Sterling starts the first game, and pushes Barkley up to first man off the bench
2) If he is out for 10-13 days he is back in time for Costa Rica and there should be the opportunity to get some game time off the bench there and ready for the knockout round.
3) Who are we going to call up who would make a difference especially vs Italy which he is defo out off? The only option I can really see would be Carrick as he is a better back up to Gerrard than Lampard is or John Stones if he doesn't trust Jones/Smalling at CB after their performance yesterday.(Personally I didn't think Jones was terrible, but maybe that assessment is just as bad)

The match thread on red cafe was hilarious people calling each other out of it.

Whether Italy wins their group and marches to the finals or flames out with three group losses, no one who follows the Italian NT really reads much from their performance in friendlies.

It did seem evident that there's a bit of scrambling on Prandelli's part to revamp tactics now that Montolivo is out. He's very underrated in what he does for the Italian side since his ability to play every midfield position allows a lot of shifting on the fly within matches.

Italy's 2006 WC build up friendlies were much worse and they were almost as bad before EURO 2012. The friendlies before the 2020 WC were much better (even if that really doesn't mean much since losing Pirlo at the very last minute skewed everything).

Regardless, Italy's performance has usually flown directly in the face of the accepted American coach mantra of "practice like champions, play like champions"
