FIFA has given up on its efforts to expand the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams, football's world governing body announced on Wednesday.

"In line with the conclusions of the feasibility study approved by the FIFA Council at its last meeting, FIFA and Qatar have jointly explored all possibilities to increase the number of participant teams from 32 to 48 teams by involving neighbouring countries at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022," a FIFA statement read on Thursday. "Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now.

Unfortunately they're saving that for us when we host in 2026.

I had hopes that 48 could be done for Qatar so they would scrap any thought of it for 2026.

I'm sure it'll be back to 32 for 2030.

I guess nobody in the 33-48 range was willing to pay enough bribe money.

Lol FIFA ain’t gonna accept a version of the world cup where they make less money than the prior iteration.

I actually don't mind expanding to 48 teams. Give me more knockout games.

I want it back to 24 (I know it won't happen). Give me quality over quantity. It's the reason the Euro's have been great viewing before they expanded.

I thought the expanded Euros was great. Iceland and Wales were fun to watch.

Not really, Iran is a better footballing nation than UEA, and their history proves that. Not saying the Iran vs. Morocco match was mouth watering but it can get worse than that.
