FIFA Rankings released (September edition)

I know they mean nothing, but interesting to see the movement given the competitive matches just completed. Argentina, Belgium and Uruguay made nice jumps.

Based on the rankings, and if FIFA's ruling against Cape Verde holds, these are the pots for the final African qualifying draw to be held Monday:
Pot 1 (seeded): Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria, Nigeria, Tunisia (this would be Cape Verde if reversed)
Pot 2 (unseeded): Egypt, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal, Ethiopia

CAF is such a terrible organization, worse than FIFA and CONCACAF. Why waste a qualifying cycle with a group stage when the entire qualification comes down to two games? A bunch of good teams are getting screwed because FIFA rankings determine seeding.
AFCON is a terrible waste of time for everyone involved besides corrupt CAF officials.

Although this is wishful thinking, with Wins in our last 2 WCQs and some luck over in Europe with Greece , Croatia and Portugal taking a loss or two in their final group games and in the playoff,
the US could weasel their way into the top 10.
From there who knows what FIFAs agenda will be with the seeding process, but it would give us a chance (albeit maybe a long shot) @ grabbing the 8 seed.

This doesnt REALLY matter that much. Who cares if we jump a top 8 team and are the Pot 1 team in our group if the team we jumped becomes the Pot 2. Portugal vs US (or some other team, just and example) is the same game regardless of seeding.

Being in pot 1 could mean that we maybe avoid a team like Portugal.

Exactly, its a crap shoot regardless which pot we are in, and the fact that FIFA can literally do whatever they want creates even more unknown, but being in POT 1 lessens the negatives outcomes a small bit

Is it possible that America creeps into the top 8 by the time they seed for the World Cup draw? I really know very little about how hard it would be to make that jump.

The odds of the USA getting a seed in the 2014 World Cup is 2.35% as of September 6th, so it should be a tiny bit higher now.
