Great article. All of the quotes about tactics were so painfully obvious. I love to think about Wil Trapp finding out he's playing left mid while in the tunnel before the game.

Act 5: More Hope, but No Change...
this final act was the most depressing thing about the article. We’ve made no substantive changes. frick everyone involved.

Except we kind of have.

Sounds like a totally dysfunctional family.
Including clueless parents (USMNT execs), irresponsible teenagers (coaches), and bratty children (players).
A Triumvirate of Dysfunction.
The article sure tries hard to pretend that the players were/are just innocent babes in the woods though.

I didn't skip over that word.

What? One of the biggest problems we've had was that one or two people had too much power and could do whatever they wanted. How is changing that not substantive? We no longer have one guy holding 2 full-time jobs. How is that not substantive? We've added a position that has oversight of the manager, players, and we'll being of the national team. How is that not substantive?

Earnie Stewart will be announced as USMNT GM this afternoon.

that seems like the bare minimum that could have been done, and it remains to be seen just how much influence that position will have in practice as opposed to in theory. That said, i'm not opposed to it, but given the grand scale of the massive failure, the addition of that position does very little to assuage my concerns.

In less than a year?
Really in only ~4 months, since the new election was in February .
And a lot of that time has been dedicated to securing votes for the 2026 WC, which will be voted on very soon (Afghanistan just gave us their support this morning).

I like Earnie but like many I am worried about some of the limitations the GM position has

Not really.

Sounds like a good fall guy if the next manager doesn’t work out.
What else is in the job description besides picking the manager?

Setting up a scouting network of sorts.

Building an integrated national team staff, managing the day-to-day environment of the senior team, monitoring the player pool, and integrating new players.
I assume that includes helping players find a good fit with their clubs, and being in contact with their clubs to monitor their development, etc.
