re: Earnie Stewart promoted to Sporting Director
So do we know what Earnie ever actually did as GM other than hold up the hiring of a new USMNT coach?

re: Earnie Stewart promoted to Sporting Director
In and of itself, I think the idea of a Sporting Director position is a good one. I also think the men’s and women’s program having separate general managers is a good and necessary thing, since each program operates in a very different reality. Kate Markgraf seems like a great hire for the women’s GM.

However, what I’m not happy about is the fact that the Sporting Director position will be subservient to the CEO position. I feel like those positions should be on the same level of the pyramid, answering only to the federation president. The CEO basically oversees the off-field USSF business, while the Sporting Director oversees the on-field business. Jay Berhalter shouldn’t have any say in how Earnie Stewart does his job. That doesn’t make sense to me. That would be like the Secretary of the Treasury telling the Secretary of Defense how to run the military.

I understand people will look at the chart and think a lot of those positions are unnecessary. But when I look at the English FA’s website, they have 10 administrative divisions that essentially cover the same areas as those on the USSF’s chart. If those positions were staffed by competent people, I think it would help make us a well-run, modernly organized federation. But I don’t think many of those current administrators are competent. And it’s kinda weird there are separate positions for Chief of Sport Development and Chief of Soccer when it seems like they do the exact same thing. Surely, that could be consolidated into a single unit.

Here’s a link to English FA’s website where it lists the administrative divisions, for those curious. LINK

With a primary focus on the senior MNT, here are the core responsibilities that Stewart will assume in his position:

--Leading the search and hiring process for the Head Coach;

--Creating the environment—both day-to-day and long-term—for the Head Coach and the Men’s National Team to succeed;

--Ensuring that U.S. Soccer’s Style of Play, Team Tactical Principles, and Key Qualities are being implemented within the Men’s National Team;

--Creating a player profile for each position on the field based on the Style of Play, Team Tactical Principles, and Key Qualities;

--Working with the Head Coach to create positional depth charts based on the player profile, accounting for player’s current and potential ability to compete at the highest levels in the world;

--Evaluating and monitoring players coming up through the Youth National Team programs and ensuring that the best talent is identified and cultivated; and,

--Communicating and working with the Sport Development Departments to drive technical alignment and integration, including Coaching Education, Player Development, High Performance, Talent Identification and Youth National Teams.

The CSDO is in charge of the technical aspects while the CSO is in charge of the administrative aspects. Can the two be combined? Maybe. I don't know enough about either side to say for sure, but it sounds like they both fall under the Sporting Director now.

It sounds like their next job is to hire ~10 YNT coaches.

Damn that tree of jobs for USA soccer is more bloated than our Government. ROI on it is very low.

Is it really, though? Which ones would you get rid of or combine? We essentially have only 7 bureaus now.

Stakeholders
Communications
Finance
Legal
Commercial
Human Resources
Sporting

My state government department has 21 bureaus.

He actually delayed that.

ETA: I'm legit pissed that we waited/wasted a year with Sarachen as a caretaker manager, when we could've hired Gregg the day Bruce resigned if that was always the rout we were going, yet we had to wait for Earnie to become the GM only for him to get moved from the position less than a year in.

None of this feels right.

It only took him ~2.5 months.

I'm not doing this with you again. My point, as it has always been, was that we could've hired Gregg right after the T&T loss. Instead we waited a year because of... reasons.

I'm saying the people that hired him delayed it, not Earnie.

Cordeiro ran on having a clear and calculated... We're seeing that that never existed and our fears of him being Sunil 2.0 are being realized. No plan, no transparency, just cronyism.

He's largely followed his plan on the soccer side of things, albeit slowly.
