Dumb question from a dude that only watches soccer every 4 years.

How is the seeding determined in the World Cup? Is it based strictly on qualifying matches or is it a power ranking (eye test)? Is it over the last 4 years or the year leading up to the World Cup. How do they determine who is in each group? Do the top seeds usually get the “easiest” groups?
Also do the guys on the USMT play in the bigger club leagues now? I know the last team was a lot of MLS dudes and second level Club guys. I think the goalie played in the Premier League
Sorry for the dumb questions.

There is no seeding. The groups are kinda randomly chosen with the group teams being from different parts of the world.

Yes, most of our starting 11 plays for big league clubs.

Seeding is determined primarily by the FIFA world rankings, with the lone exception being the host countries.
Teams were placed in 4 pots, with Pot 1 being the highest ranked teams plus Mexico, Canada and the USA. For the most part, FIFA tried to keep teams from the same part of the world out of the same group. I think the exception to that was European teams because so many qualify.

It’s definitely not completely random. Teams are put into pots (pot A, B, C, D) based on FIFA ranking. Teams in pot A are drawn into each group then B and so on. They don’t want two teams from the same region in a group with the exception of Europe so they will move teams around if that happens. That’s a high level of how it’s done.

Thanks. Could someone list our players and what club they play for. I would be interested in knowing that. Thanks in advance.

I recognized AC Milan and Crystal Palace off that list. Less than half or MLS guys. Are the French and German clubs top tier? I don’t know jack. In my uneducated mind I think top tier is Premier League.

Top 4 leagues are France, England, Germany, and Spain. Portugal and Netherlands are the next tier.

Italy isn’t even second tier?

A. Robinson (Fulham)
Aaronson (Leeds)
Adams (Bournemouth)
Are all in the Premier League along with Richards at Palace as you mentioned. Wright with Coventry won the Championship (English second tier) this year and are promoted for next season.

In terms of European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France is the top tier (in order imo)
Then Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey
Then Belgium, Switzerland, Austria
Then the Nordic countries
There is a lot of variability year to year in those last 6 leagues in terms of how they perform in European competition.

Is this what Wrexham is? Or are they below that?

Yeah that’s where Wrexham is currently

I agree with CWill’s breakdown.
And I’d say the English Championship (their second league) is above or on par with the Turkish, Belgian, and Austrian leagues, once you exclude the top 2-3 teams from each of those countries.
I’d say the MLS is between the Turkish/Belgian/Austrian category and the Scandinavian countries and below the Championship.
It’s a tough comparison to make though bc MLS has more parity than the other leagues where the same few teams win every year.

Kind of cool to see the amount playing for European Club teams.
I wonder how many though are Americans that grew up here and are not Europeans whose fathers were American service men .....like Tom Dooley and Earnie Stewart back in the 90s.
