No.
That's like saying Mississippi State can beat Alabama "any given day". Bama would have to have an absolutely terrible game, while the Maroons would have to have their best game of the season. Ditto for U.S. v. Spain (or Germany, Italy, etc.)
Also, I contend that Spain's 3rd 18 (players 37-54) would have a better than even shot at beating USMNT's top 18.

Spain didn't have a bad day against us. We defended our butts off collectively as a team. Timmy made some great saves. They really had one poor play - Ramos not clearing the ball. And that wasn't the margin of victory.
I'm not saying we're better than these teams, but I am saying we do well enough against them on a routine basis that some of you need to give us more credit. We are capable of beating them and outplaying them.

It's a good point about not knocking our team too much.
However, there's just an immense leap from winning a friendly or Conf Cup match against a power to beating 2 or 3 of them in a row in a world cup.
Just look at both the winners and even runners up in the WC finals the past couple of decades. Every squad you see is packed with top players at elite clubs and even more daunting most of them have 2 or 3 that frequent lists of the greatest 100 or so players to ever play the game:
Zidane, Ronaldo, Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Totti, Maldini, Iniesta, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Henry, Vieri, Buffon, Rivaldo, Del Piero, Baggio, Rudi Völler, Maradona, Aldair, Baresi, Romário, Dechamps, Klinsmann, Nesta . . .
When we produce a couple of guys like this to compliment a lineup overflowing with players who star for Real, Barca, Bayern, Juve etc, we'll stand a decent chance of getting into a final.
The pertinent question isn't so much will we win a WC but will we ever produce this caliber of player in abundance.

When I was in India, I only talked soccer with the locals. Cricket was the national sport, but soccer was the thing that connected all of us together. I talked to many kids who said they wanted to play soccer but there wasn't anywhere for them to go. All it takes is organization and commitment for any country to become decent.
My parents are from India, and I've been there several times. The people would get behind a strong national soccer team in a heartbeat. That said, they're not even close.

You can't tell me Spain wasn't taking that Confederation Cup match seriously though. Maybe not World Cup serious, but it was no friendly. They wanted to win and face Brazil. We also gave a motivated Brazil team all they could handle.
And the beauty of it is, we don't have to beat 2 or 3 of them in a row to get to a final (but likely would have to beat 2 to win a final). Look at the last world cup. We just have to beat one of them to make the final, something many in this thread don't even think would be possible. That was the maddening thing about that Ghana game.
Though getting past Uruguay in the form they were in would have been very tough anyway.

We aren't one of those teams, and won't be for the forseeable (two WC cycles) future.
If this is the case, most of us should feel pretty good about winning a World Cup in our life time.

From an outsider's perspective it seems that nationally they are really only organized in cricket and nothing else?
This comes plainly from observing their prowess in that sport and little else (including the Olympics - with some sort of good national organization a country of that size should produce some more high caliber Olympic athletes).
Then again, I could be way off

Considering I've seen both accepted segregation and a black US President. I'll never put anything beyond the span of one lifetime.

on another note.
We almost saw the USA in a WC Final over 10 years ago in 2002.
The USA played better than Germany and came up unlucky and screwed by the refs (a lot of countries could make that claim in that tournament)
Had the USA gone to penalties (Kahn vs Friedel, epic) and won they would have faced... South Korea.
A VERY hard game vs the home team but they were beatable and the USA had already faced them and tied so it's perfectly reasonable that the USA could have won that game and made the final.
NOW.... vs that Brazil team the USA would probably have been drubbed ala 2012 Notre Dame but heck, we made the final, four years removed from finishing dead last and less than a decade from not even having a professional outdoor league.

This is what I was trying to get at. I mean, the Italian team of 2006 had Del Piero and Totti on the same forward line, with Pirlo, Gattuso and De Rossi behind them. We played them to a draw, but Christ what a team that was. If we ever get to a point where we are producing multitudes of players like that, I will eat my words. But I just don't think we will.

I would agree. That said, they do like soccer. I know a lot of people like playing it and many more follow various club and international teams. No reason for me to think they wouldn't get behind a national team capable of making some noise.
