I'm saying that only 3-4 players in the entire world meet that description, and they'd be nearly impossible to buy (think Bale to Madrid numbers).

Oh then I agree. Pogba would be spectacular. As would Vidal.

i'm not sure there are only 3-4 MFs who we'd need to win the league. hell, i think we *could* win it without buying a CM this summer. there are more than 3 or 4 that would significantly increase our chances. i think any of the ones we've been linked to heavily (WC, SK, LB, SB, MS, etc) would put us damn near Chelsea and City as favorites.

I think we need two more players to compete. A DM and a CB. Three more players to be favorites if we were in for a striker.

Flamini, Mertesacker, and Arteta were all signed as stopgaps and we haven't even begun to address those areas long term.

disagree with that. chambers seems to be our RCB of the future. seems very likely he is being molded for that role. if not, he's being molded to play DM. i think he'll be per's successor in a year or two. (also, not sure i'd call per a stop gap as we had targeted him for a long time and made prior attempts to sign him).

arteta/flamini is interesting in that they are different players but generally won't be on the pitch at the same time. we certainly need at least one dedicated deeper CM brought in to replace them, if that role isn't for chambers.

i think with a marginally better injury record last season we would have competed. considering we lead the league for more than anyone last season and we're deeper and more talented this season, barring another catastrophic injury situation, i'd be shocked if we weren't competing. i think if we add a DM, we might be favorites (depending on who we get). CB we don't need unless we sell TV5 (which seems likely) but there's a definite possibility for an upgrade at that spot too. as for striker, i think it's become even more clear that sanchez will get a chance to be this era of arsenal's Henry.

I tend to agree, but being a fan of this club for so long (it's been a decade or so, which is hard to believe) has made me the ultimate cynic. I can't trust 19 year olds any more. Kos is also getting up there in age. We will have to replace him as well.

I tend to think Mertesacker was targeted because he was fairly cheap, experienced, had shown a desire to be an Arsenal player, but his lack of passing technique always kept Wenger from pulling the trigger until it was absolutely apparent that we needed a player like him. I wish Djourou would have stayed, as he was the perfect back-up player, as well as being an excellent partner for Kos. It's hard to find career back-ups.

We have to improve our form against top teams. We were a bit naive as well during our injury crisis, and didn't adjust our play to account for the players (mainly Ramsey) we lost. What I want for us is to play a deep line all the time, and either counter attack at speed or break teams down slowly. Last year was one of the best years ever for us breaking teams down who parked the bus, and hopefully with technical players that can continue. I just don't want us to play a high line.

To be fair, I'm skeptical about our chances. Maybe if we get a DM I'll be more optimistic. I think this is Chelsea's year, though I have no clue how Mourinho is going to deal with Fabregas's inability to play defense. Man City haven't strengthened as much but they seem to have a system that works. At the same time with the right player our midfield can be better than theirs as a unit.

I mainly disagreed with how Moreno worded his statement. While I believe that it is likely we don't win the league, I don't think it is appropriate to speak in absolutes.

Also, if anyone thinks that we need a legitimate top 5 defensive mid in the entire world to top the table this year then they are off their rocker. We do have the money for one of those anyway... Vidal $$ does not equal Bale $$...

I think we still have a good shot. Just remember man city got off to a slow start while we faltered down the stretch. Really it was a few games against the lesser clubs that 3 points instead of 0-1 would have had us rt in the thick of things. I still think Chelsea wins it unless we do more business, they just have a strong side, and depends also what they will get out of drogba. They are lacking up top just like us. Torres is God awful and maybe it takes time for Costa to settle in. And if they sustain injuries they will struggle at times like last season.

With the WC players still out, and our new signings, it will take us a while to gel as well. And we have to hope that Walcott's struggles won't be too severe. We have the bones of a good team, with the potential to be a really great team. If players like Campbell, Sanogo, and Ox can step up in terms of scoring and assisting, it will go a long way to helping us. I feel like Giroud is not going to have a great year because of the fact that he's played a lot the last year. We need someone to spell him.

We also need Cazorla to hit his 2012 form.

top XI wise, Chelsea are going to be tough to top if Costa adapts quickly to the EPL. weirdly enough, especially if we land Carvalho or whoever at CM, i think we pretty clearly have the most depth of talent in the PL, which has never been the case. that's probably why i have more faith this season. we're less likely to have the catastrophic injury issues we've had in the past.

Absolutely. If Ramsey stays healthy last year, or if Ramsey and Theo stay healthy, we're right there.

That said, we didn't compete because of lack of quality depth. We've added some with Sanchez, but that's really the only place we've added depth (if you consider Chambers a Vermaelen replacement, Debuchy a Sagna replacement, etc) due to losses elsewhere.

Still a long time until the window closes. Team still needs a big buy. I think Moreno was spot on. We need another midfield option, preferably a mammoth to sit in front of the back four.

@FootbaIlCentre: Arsenal have made a £23.9m bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho. (Source: O Jogo)

Don't know if this is a respectable/reliable source or not ...

well if true i could go for that. He is exactly what we need and i just couldnt see us shelling out 45m for him.

45m would be insanity. But yes, he is what we need. If he had a little more experience, he'd be perfect.

I'll take him for 23.9 all day

he's already back doing fitness stuff which is huge. i'm no cwil, but the broadcasters were saying next month. knowing how arsenal players never recover quickly though, early Oct. is prob. safe to estimate.

When did he tear it? PT bob is a better expert on this, though I do have personal experience in tearing the ACL in my left knee
