admittedly, it's all circumstantial, but the arrival of chambers coinciding with jenks' loan, our prior link to manquillo, and bellerin's squad number make me think chambers will be the backup RB.

AW has been pretty clear in thinking chambers projects long-term at CB or CM, but he didn't say anything yesterday which implied he wasn't going to play some RB. in fact, he said he knew he wanted him after he played against us at RB.

I'm more on board with Carvalho or even khedira now. we need a bigger guy who is tall enough to help on set pieces. especially since it looks like Sanchez will frequently play centrally.

wanted us to sign him last year but Monaco payed an absurd fee. no way we get him.

and yeah, like I've said a lot recently, with per and arteta as XI stalwarts, we can't play a high line, high pressing game. great players, but they're limited.

It's the Mirror, so whatever, but the first I've seen us linked to Hummels.

I and my pants would literally explode.

Realistically, I hope we get Carvalho and another capable CB, preferably someone who could push Per and Kosc. I know those two have a good track record together, but I'm tired of reading about Per's limitations. If he's limited, we need to upgrade and use him accordingly. It's like Giroud up top.

yeah, 1) i don't think he's for sale; 2) we can't outbid ManU bc they neeeeeed him; 3) that would be a act of ruthlessness we've never seen from AW; 4) he's a RCB and we seem to be grooming Chambers for that role, long-term.

speaking of left/right roles, jack and arteta don't pair well at all. both really need to be on the left side primarily, especially when receiving the ball, for whatever reason. it screws up our spacing when they play together, imo.

I really want Carvalho. We just don't have the physicality in the midfield that we need to win the premier league. He would bring that extra edge.

Even that dbag Mexican commentator was saying it yesterday (the physicality part).

It's awful and hard to watch. Also, Ramsey played so high. He's so much better when he's deeper and making late runs, but whether it was strategy or accident, he was the first line of pressure behind the striker and Jack was always deeper. It made us so rigid. Arteta was often left with nothing really to do.

Wasn't it Alejandro Moreno? He was particularly harsh on us, but I enjoy honest commentary and not just BS.

Asking Arteta to hold the midfield by himself while Ramsey and Wilshere try to attack wildly is going to result in problems. I hope Ramsey doesn't start thinking of himself as a striker. He gets himself into great positions, but we need him as a B2B player. It's the only way to make a midfield pairing work.

rambo is great deep because he's so good at everything, but i can't lie and act like i hated him pretty much playing no. 10 against benfica. (btw rosicky was weirdly anonymous in that match, at least in the first half).

i was thinking of lineups we would use against City on Sunday. not really sure who i would go with due to different knocks.

sczc
debuchy-chambers-kos-gibbo

is guaranteed. rambo will be in the lineup, as will arteta. every other spot, i'm unsure about. i hate when arteta and flamini play together generally, but this could be a spot where it's a good mix.

arteta-flamini
joel-rambo-ox
sanchez

or maybe sanchez-sanogo-ox up top. i don't think we should scrap santi like some have petitioned for here, but if we play arteta and flamini, i think we need pace and direct play more than ball retention and intricate play.

This new confident Ramsey would not be a bad no. 10, but I was more referring to his positioning on the back line waiting to receive a pass. I'd rather have the ball at Ramsey's feet if he were to play as a no. 10, but sometimes he'd make a run, we'd lose possession, he's out of position, etc. He's going to be one of our main creative forces this season, and he's actually a player who can play anywhere, but we need his defensive workrate.

We could pair Arteta and Ramsey and play Cazorla through the middle. But we would have four runners on the field in Ox, Campbell, Sanogo and Ramsey. It would be a very direct line up.

Yes. That's the guy.

Everything he said was on par with what we need, he just seemed very bias claiming that we absolutely will not be at a level to compete with the likes of Chelsea and City this year. Also going on about how our history shows that we will not/cannot bring in the type of defensive midfielder that we need to finish on top of the table.

Disclaimer: I may have slightly misinterpreted what he said. I was pretty hungover at the time

True

Semi-True, but that's because Arsenal can't afford said player.

We have plenty of money to afford players. If we can drop 42 for Ozil and 30 for Sanchez, we can afford most players who are actually on the market. Whether we will pay what the selling team values him is another matter.

You're not understanding me. I'm saying that only 3-4 players in the entire world meet that description, and they'd be nearly impossible to buy (think Bale to Madrid numbers).
