This question was posed on Fox Sports the other day and got me thinking. We have never had so many players playing at such big clubs so it is a good question. I still say that the 2002 group is the best and most talented we've seen. Time will tell but I think the next few years should be interesting.

I'd say they have the most potential.

We have some positions that I think are far from being the most talented we've had.

I agree with this. I don’t think we have a RW/ST as good as Donovan, a striker/LW/second striker as good as Dempsey, a defensive midfielder as good as prime Bradley, a right back as good as Cherundolo, a keeper as good as Friedel/Keller/prime Howard, a right centerback as good as Demerit or Eddie Pope, a true 10 as good as Reyna, etc. But based on potential alone I think we have several positions where we could surpass some of these players in the next few years.

Hell, I'll claim them as the best ever if they just make knockout in 22 and 26

How did you forget about the GOAT?

John O'Brien was really good as well.

Prime Bradley lasted about two years. And unfortunately for him those two years came between World Cups.

I wonder how much of what we're seeing is superior talent to what we've had in the past, and how much is just players getting opportunities that were much harder for Americans to get 20+ years ago. I could easily see us fielding some of our best teams ever in the next 10 years, but I've gotten my hopes up about certain players before.

I think it lasted longer than that, but he was unfortunately forced to play higher up for us because of our lack of attacking mids.

No doubt, Jurgen didn't do him any favors with his always revolving rotations leading up to and in Brazil. Jermaine Jones, Dempsey and Tim Howard extended that man's stint for two years.

Results say yep.

I think our overall talent level has increased with each World Cup cycle... yes that even includes this past cycle. Talent only works if the system is right and team chemistry is there. the 2018 would-be World Cup team had neither of those things.

This is the first generation where a good chunk of guys are coming up through euro-academies. They are all still young though, so this cycle is super important in qualifying and getting that first experience out of the way, because the next World Cup after that will be on our turf with this Pulisic-led generation right in its prime. In terms of the stars aligning in our favor, 2026 will be the best chance we ever have at winning a World Cup.

That's actually very true. Once Beas moved to LB he had it locked down for years. Even with all this upcoming talent it's still a black hole for us.

And on the Bradley thing, he was about as good as he's ever been in the 2010 WC so we did get to see Prime Bradley on a big stage.

I’m gonna disagree here, he was very good from 2008-2014 at least.

Hard to predict the future. Kind of fatalistic to look at a World Cup in 2026 and say we will never have a better chance at winning one. Our player pool is just going to keep getting better.

I mean, I'm sure there will be more opportunities, but in terms of the past and the near future, it'll be our best chance ever.

Saying it will be our best chance to date would probably be a better way of phrasing it.

I mean, it's all semantics.

"to date" and "ever" both apply considering we've never really had a legit chance to win a World Cup "ever".
