This is like the 1998 home run race again.

not really... Messi is at the end of his career, and this is likely his last World Cup... Mbappe is in his prime and likely has at least 2 more World Cups to play in... Mbappe should sail over 20, possibly over 25, in his career... shite, he could even get to 30

except in 1998 they started at the same time.
one didn’t get a 10 year head start.

I don’t think Mbappe will have the same longevity as Messi but I think as long as Messi doesn’t go nuclear the rest of this Word Cup, Mbappe passes him easily.

They are different players with different skill sets.
I don't envision Mbappe to ever sit in a traditional 10 role like Messi has had to through times in his career.

Messi is an incredible player but Gerd Muller's 15 in half the games is way more impressive to me.

Between Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland, the biggest stars have delivered in this World Cup more than any other time I can remember!

I think Mbappe will take the lead this tournament but to say he has two World Cups left is almost insane. He’ll be 31 at the next World Cup. He is in his 11th year of professional soccer lol. There is no telling how much longer he has.

Mbappe’s pace is right there with Muller’s
Mbappe is at a goal per match, Muller was 1.08 per match. Messi is 0.64 per match.
Mbappe is going to obliterate this record, he’s the best WC scorer we’ve ever seen and he’s got 2 maybe 3 more in him

And with the expanded tournament, with more games, there will be more chances for goals than we’ve seen in the past

Mbappé I feel has had a slightly more consistent cast during his WCs and will now benefit from the expansion and facing weaker teams.

Greatest WC scorer ever, but ffs 3 more World Cups? Do you honestly expect him to be playing at this level in 12 more years?
There is no guarantee he’ll be fit for the 2030 World Cup. About 50 games per year. Thats 200 games give or take. He’s a winger who relies on blinding speed and insane finishing. That kind of gift can diminish pretty quickly

. He’ll be 31 at the next World Cup.
that's not really ancient in soccer... very easily could see him playing at a top tier level at 31... may drop off a little at 35, but i said what i said... he has 2 more WCs in him, IMO

Mbappe will absolutely take it. He has time on his side.

I would argue Muller only played in 2 WC's against arguably better competition due to the 16 team format.
