I don't think the Bundesliga has ever been irrelevant. It may have gone through spells where it wasn't as "good" as other leagues. But as we see, some of this is a bit cyclical.
Right no the BPL is a bit tougher than others, along with La Liga. But that'll change some each year.
As for the other two of you, Wynalda was pretty much all we had up front for two World Cup cycles. Got himself kicked out of Italia 90, being baited by the Czechs. Redeemed himself a bit by scoring the equaliser in Pontiac, Michigan against Roy Hodgson's Sweden to put us through to the second round.

Would you really put O'Brien as one of the best players of all time? Sure, if he had stayed healthy maybe, but that's kind of like putting Stuart Holden on the list just because he showed some flashes of being one of the best midfielders in the prem.

O'Brien played brilliantly in the 2002 World Cup. Had a long stint with Ajax and was one of the first Americans to play for a major European club. So sure I would.

Eric Wynalda played two years in the Bundesliga in the mid 90s. Claudio Reyna (and Frankie Hejduk, for that matter) were at Bayern Leverkeusen in the mid 90s. John O'Brien was skilled - very skilled... but so was Clint Mathis. Neither could turn that skill into an impressive career, for varying reasons. They both belong in a "what could have been" category, NOT a best XI.
ETA: John Harkes played (captained?) for a pretty good (at that time) Sheffield Wednesday, Derby and West Ham in the early 90s. Harkes' body of work warrants inclusion in a best XI well before O'Brien.

Howard > Meola, although I think we're both in agreement there.
Fabien > Agoos
Dempsey > Ramos, McBride, and Wynalda
Jozy > Ramos and Wynalda
Cherundolo > Hedjuk, although Cherundolo isn't part of the current NT.
I agree that Reyna > Jermaine Jones, and our central defenders are just too young at this point to compare to the guys from the 90s. Eddie Pope is better than both Bocanegra and Balboa though.
I agree with you on O'Brien. He was great, but he played in such a limited amount of games with Ajax and the USMNT. Damn shame, too.

At DCM I'm taking O'Brien before Bradley. Understand the disagreement but I guess that's why these threads exist.
