Can you give me a specific team that was more talented? I'm not all that familiar with US soccer before 2010.

2002 was pretty stacked.
Reyna, Hejduk, Max-Moore, Lewis, Friedel and Keller were all in their primes and featuring for top flight clubs in the Bundesliga and EPL.
John O'Brien was poised to become the best American of all-time with Ajax before injuries fricked up his whole career, but he was in form during that WC.
And then of course, you had a pair of 20 year olds named Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley.
On top of that, you had Stewart and Jones a bit passed their primes but still valuable both as players and Veterans.
That team was stacked and damn near should've been in the semifinals.

2002 was more talented.
GK: Friedel was top 10 in the world
RB: Tony Sanneh. Not an amazing career, but he was in his prime that season and was good enough to start in the Bundesliga.
LB: Frankie Hedjuk. Not uber talented but a guy who busted his arse and maximized his abilities.
CD: Eddie Pope. Probably our best defender ever.
CD: Jeff Agoos. He was terrible at this point in his career.
DM: Pablo Mastroeni. Decent holding midfielder and had some great tournaments for the US.
CM: Claudio Reyna. One of the best American players ever. Started and played serious minutes everywhere, England, Germany, and Scotland.
RAM: Landon Donovan. Voted U-23 player of the tournament. One of our best players ever.
LAM: DaMarcus Beasley. Had a great Cup. Was a real star for PSV for a couple years.
CF: Brian McBride. Great target man. Much like Hedjuk, he made up for his lack of skill with his passion and clutch performances.
Our final spot was filled by either Clint Mathis, Earnie Stewart, John O'Brien, or Josh Wolff.
Mathis was a talented guy who was at his peak as a scorer in the early 2000s. Wolff was average. Stewart was a solid CM who was getting old. And O'Brien was a guy who was damn near a generational talent for the 15 months he was healthy. Cobi Jones played a little bit too. He was similar to Stewart at this point.

O'Brien played every minute of that tournament.
He was a top 3 player for us in Korea/Japan.

You're right. I should have swapped Beasley with O'Brien, actually.

We hear this every fricking time -
I’ll believe it when I see it. Field is weak as frick this year - would have been nice to have had a crack at it

I'll say 02 is the best bet, but I can't really say without knowing the roster for 2022.

Well I wouldn't say he's easily the best we've ever had, so I think "one of our best players ever" is adequate.

Soccer has changed so much since 02. Our run was in one of the most controversial and weakest WCs in recent memory.
2022 should feature our best yet with regards to first touch, passing, etc.

Doesn't really matter when looking strictly at one roster.

Is it safe to say this will be the most talented or promising team we’ve ever had. I don’t think we’ve ever had this amount of young talent. Every position has 18-21 yr old kids solidifying their spot on this team.
I'm cautiously optimistic, as should you be.

The exciting thing is that the group of young players in the 17-21 range are literally the first ever MLS academy and Development Academy program products. The changes we made in our development about 10 years ago has in part led to this great crop of young talents. The changes were too late for the 2018 team to benefit, which is a big part of why our domestic players aged 24-29 are so bad.
As domestic academies continue to improve, our youth development will only improve as well. Obviously, big changes still need to come (especially youth compensation) for us to come close to reaching our potential. But it’s slowly getting better, at least.
It might turn out 5-6 years from now that Pulisic isn’t even the best player from this young crop. A lot of people around US Soccer think Gio Reyna is even better at 15 than Pulisic was. We’ll see how he does at Dortmund.

Selling out to Mexico aside, Donovan is our best player and it's not close.
He leads in total goals, total assists and total World Cup goals

Remember how hyped we were about Mix taking over in the midfield around this time four year ago?
Speak for yourself.
ETA: and don’t get me wrong, I thought he would be starting for us this year, but I don’t remember being overly hyped about him.

Because we've had guys like Reyna, Keller, Friedel, Stewart, Cherundolo, Bocanegra, etc.

I think 2026 will be better than 2022. A lot of our guys we're excited about will still be in their very early 20s when the next world cup is played.
2026, at home, should be really exciting.
