Volodymyr Zelenskyy's five-year term as Ukraine's president formally ends on May 20. An election would normally have been held in late March, but the parliament postponed the vote as the country is still at war and under martial law. But a major question remains for Ukrainians: who might succeed Zelenskyy once he leaves office? In early 2024, few politicians and commentators openly pondered who could, or should, follow Zelenskyy. At the end of February, when Zelenskyy looked back on the past two years of fighting with Russia, the president dismissed any talk questioning his legitimacy as a "hostile narrative." Speaking with journalists, Zelenskyy said neither the country's allies nor anyone in Ukraine were asking such questions. He said any such speculation was "part of the Russian Federation's program." Ukrainian legal experts consulted by DW said they expected Zelenskyy would remain in power until a new president is elected. "The Ukrainian constitution states this clearly," said Andriy Mahera, of the Center of Policy and Legal Reform in Kyiv. "The president does not automatically lose his powers five years after inauguration. These powers are only removed when the newly elected president takes office, i.e., after elections." Volodymyr Zelenskyy marks 5 years as Ukraine's president 03:09 Presidential and parliamentary elections are currently out of the question. Ukraine's constitution places a temporary restriction on the former, whereas martial law bans both — in part , officials have said, to protect voters from harm.

He's not leaving until he dies of old age.

That should enrage the US, as he ousted our puppet. We'll never get a shot to get our guy in office for decades.

Huh. Muh Russian disinformation? Now where have we heard that before for the past few years?

I don't understand how people still can't clearly see exactly what's going on.

Yeah, most countries actively at war on their own turf usually don't hold elections. If we were invaded by a foreign power or at Civil War our elections would be suspended as well.

The Russian fanboys who love President for life Putin are pointing fingers at the country they invaded, which is actually following its constitution.

We held elections during the War of 1812, the indian wars, and the Civil War. Not to mention during both world wars.

That said, I don't know how Ukraine could hold elections right now considering there are 8 million Ukrainians who fled the country due to the war and Russia controls 20% of Ukraine's territory.

US had election even during the civil war. Per the White House we’re funding this war to defend democracy. Nothing says defending democracy by not allowing military aged men to leave the country, suspending documents assistance in embassies forcing men to return and be trapped, getting dragged off the street to be thrown in war, then having no say so in electing a leader to say “no I don’t like being a prisoner in my country hiding to be sent on a suicide mission”

Martial law and conscription are not new concepts, or unique in any way to Ukraine.

England didn't have elections during either world war.

It's really not unusual.

It's definitely more common in Parliamentary systems, which often don't have set election schedules. Governments collapse and new elections are called somewhat at random.

Either that's a troll or you're having a stroke.

Zelensky is our CIA installed puppet. He will be there till the Russians kill him, or a surviving Ukrainian does. I suspect it will be some time next year when Biden's gone and his Kompromat leverage no longer holds the power it does now over the next US President.

I think blinkin suggested Ukraine wouldn't hold elections even if peace was negotiated.
