The Drainpipe Drone
“This is a very interesting and quite nice drone,” DanielR told me. “The people who made it know what they are doing. The over-all design is similar to radio-controlled aircraft built by hobbyists many, many years ago. However, the airframe has been carefully designed to use locally-sourced, low-cost materials.”

The fuselage of the drone, its backbone so to speak, is what looks like length of orange plastic drainpipe six inches in diameter. DanielR was puzzled by the color choice, until European commenters told him that orange is the standard code for pipes carrying underground electrical cables in Europe, and six inches is the usual diameter. So the makers simply acquired sturdy PVC piping off the shelf.

The wings are constructed like model aircraft wings: The main support or spar is an aluminum tube, and the wing is given shape by machine-cut wooden ribs. It is covered with heat-shrink plastic film similar to that used to winterize boats which adds strength and minimizes drag. The shape of the wing is maintained by a set of foam inserts.

The fuselage is comprised of gallon jugs? Wouldn't fuel eat that shite?

I'm preparing to make my annual donation to Ukraine (IRS).

I think that's more of an example of a lack US aid.

In other news, Zelensky and US Congressmen buy more vacation homes... nothing to see here.

Assuming a gasoline engine, most plastics can handle it.

And from what I see in the photo, I'm definitely assuming a gasoline engine. Pretty rudimentary although I do give a nod for abstract creativity and improvisation.

Ukraine and Russia are creating DIY flying IEDs using anything. ISIS were the first to use FPV drones to drop grenades on troops and armored vehicles in Syria. back in 2015 there were so many FPV drone footage by ISIS.

the Ukrainians and Donbas militia's were blowing each other up with suicide drones even before Russia entered the war.

You can buy chicom 65cc chainsaw engines for about $50 and it will probably fly 70 pounds or so

World War 2 US fighter planes, notably the P-47, used drop tanks made of paper and I think wax. These tanks carried fuel and were jettisoned when empty or when under attack over enemy territory.

They were designed so that they contained no useful material that could be recovered by the enemy.

These are one way drones. It's reasonable to build them out of cheap and disposable material. Also, a wartime drone might be designed to a different standard than a peacetime drone.

To be fair, they probably only get about $200USD after Grifter Z, the Big Guy, and all the US politicians get their cut.

Yeah and its super effective. Hopefully someone on our side is coming up
With ways to counter this type of warfare. The drones will get smaller and smarter.
