X sues Media Matters after report about ads next to antisemitic content
By Sheila Dang
November 20, 2023

Nov 20 (Reuters) - Messaging platform X on Monday sued media watchdog group Media Matters, alleging the organization defamed the platform after it published a report that said ads for major brands had appeared next to posts touting Nazism.

X, formerly Twitter, has faced growing outrage since Media Matters published the report on Thursday, which led IBM, Comcast and several other advertisers to pull ads from the platform in response.
...

In an interview with Reuters earlier on Monday, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said the nonprofit's findings flew in the face of X's statements that it had introduced safety protections to prevent ads from appearing next to harmful content.

"If you search for white nationalist content, there are ads flourishing. The system they say exists is not operating as such," he said.

I understand that people might not like media matters, but did they report anything false? This seems like another stupid lawsuit from elon. He had one to try to get out of buying twitter. His track record says he will talk a big game and then whine like a bitch when it goes nowhere.

They probably committed fraud by multiple states definitions.

I’d be curious to see the causes of action. Tortious interference with a contractual relationship is what immediately comes to mind.

They actually manufactured the story for the purpose of chasing off Xs advertisers.

Intentional interference with contract.

NC Tigah explained it well

"Media Matters basically conjured a thread using multiple gaslight accounts.

MM employees in fake accounts used neutral or left leaning text-based posts which were bot recognized as ad acceptable. They used only jpeg's, no text, to convey the pro-Hitler, antisemitic content ... i.e., much more difficult in terms of bot recognition.

Once the ads populated, Media Matters edited and/or deleted (curated) non-Nazi content, took screen grabs of IBM Ads in a "Hitler Thread," and wrote articles berating IBM for buying the X ad space.

The kicker?
In several instances the sole viewer of the ad juxtaposition was the Media Matters hitpiece author. Not a single other human saw it.

It sounds like MM then pressured, extorted IBM to abandon X-ads. It did the same with several other companies. At the same time, MM aggressively pressured media-houses to cover the story. So when Musk justifiably called out the ADL as anti-white and racist, IBM finally caved. The dam broke. US media lurched into the story, and the other X-sponsoring companies withdrew in kind.

That is targeted corporate sabotage on a whole new paradigm from the DVS v Fox accusations."

Manufactured the story by taking screenshots of the website?

Did they photoshop anything? Which ads and posts were fake?

I'm skeptical that anything happens, but media matters needs to be destroyed

Where does the burden of proof lie?

This sounds like something the Twitter algorithm may have prevented. Intentionally. If that’s the case, I’m guessing that’s what Elon will submit as evidence.

Meanwhile, media matters may not actually have any examples of what it alleged.

Here's my question. The Twitter CEO confirmed that 1 single non MM accounts did see it.

Now that's obviously small potatoes and pretty absurd for these companies to freak out while still spending for ads on TikTok and FB like they don't have issues but...

Specific to the lawsuit, does the fact that some real accounts saw it matter?

Yeah. Betting against Elon is a really smart position to take.

I’m not sure how dispositive that will be. X’s damages aren’t from what users did or did not see. Great PR point but I don’t see the legal significance of it.
