The West Virginia state Senate on Saturday tried to vote to give teachers a smaller raise hike than negotiated, but accidentally voted on a bill giving teachers the requested raise.

Republicans in the state Senate on Saturday thought they had voted unanimously on a bill that only offered a four percent raise, according to local reporters.

Shortly after, lawmakers realized they had mistakenly voted to approve the House's five percent raise bill. Republicans immediately began working to repeal the law and instead pass a four percent raise for teachers.

Democrats reportedly opposed repealing the bill and cheered the accidental vote to approve a five percent raise.

It seems preposterous to me that teachers go on strike.

These aren't coal miners or hard labor people protesting protections from workplace deaths, sanitary conditions, black lung, etc.... these are people protesting that their RAISE is not big enough. Do YOU protest when your raise is not big enough?

It frankly debunks their common talking point about "I teach because I love the kids".

If you look at the history of unions in this world, and why they formed, you would come away with the conclusion that teacher unions are not justified.

Unions formed for ONE reason:

The striving for profit by capitalists in some cases incentivizes them to undersupply safe workplace conditions and pay.

NOBODY is striving for profit in the public sector, so there is no occurrence of underpay or cutting of working conditions. So who do teachers need to unionize against?

I have a very close relative who is a teacher. I make way more than she does and I’m not sitting on 30k college debt.

If you don’t make more than a teacher....you do need a new profession.

getting what you're worth and working in good conditions have nothing to do with the mission of your employer

They're striking because their health insurance premiums are increasing at a higher rate than the raise that was being offered. Many were actually set to get a pay cut.

When you’re being woefully underpaid, yes.
