You don’t need some money laundering organization for the MIC to subsidize the defense of Europe to be allies.

I’d be willing to make this deal. They drop all tariffs on us and we’ll drop tariffs on them. They commit to buying such and such percent of our goods and we stay in NATO. Or we leave NATO and continue to play the tariff game and they can defend themselves.

It has been wildly successful as a deterrent. Removing the deterrent invites more conflicts in the future.

I would rather avoid having to negotiate with a Russia that covers much more of Europe.

What does a US membership in UN or NATO do for us other than take our money?

As one of the permanent members of NATO, we have the power to veto any decision. If we withdraw, we lose that right I don’t disagree with sentiments expressed here about the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of NATO but, as long as it exists, we need to be in it. Should we refuse to pay more than our fair share? Absolutely

I will admit that Europe has gotten way too snooty toward the US.

So yeah I admit that I cannot fault Trump for seeing the world as it really is.

But they sure as hell know how to create wealth without invading countries much more than Russia does.

Russia is one big giant pile of corruption.

Easy to do when you don’t have to pay for the defense of the entire western world and mooch off daddy for 4 generations

Does it really matter? They do what we say but undermine us at every turn. If we are not in nato they will still ask us what do do.

We need allies. But US has been doing the NATO heavy lifting for some time. US no longer has the financial resources to fund every operation.

I think it does matter but you could well be correct

I like having bases we can use from around the globe. Its good for defense. If that can happen without western Europe then fine.

United Nations too!

We probably won't leave NATO.
We aren't leaving the UN.

And now we have the Board of Peace which will eventually wind up being a drain (we've already committed $10 billion to it) despite not having been formed by treaty or approved by Congress.

100% yes.

NATO now makes us less safe, increases our chances of getting ensnared in war, drains our resources, protects countries who do not share our values, and makes us weaker in our ever increasing rivalry with China, our actual real threat.

NATO was formed as a defensive alliance to stop the spread of communism across Europe by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union no longer exists. Russia is not a communist state. The only small remnants of communism that remain are largely in the Western European countries we defend. The original needs for NATO, ideology against communism and military defense from a Soviet Union determined to spread that communist ideology, no longer exist.

Europe does not share our values of democracy and free speech.

NATO has moved from a defensive military alliance to an offensive expansionary military alliance, threatening instability and the provocation of war. Moreover, it has swollen to a bureaucracy that exists to support lifelong political bureaucrats and their organizations that bleed taxpayer money like parasites.

It allows Europe to shirk its own responsibility for its own defense.

China is our threat. NATO and Europe will not support us in our rivalry with China. In fact, they will seek to undermine us in many respects.

We need to exit NATO.

It not longer serves the interests of the USA.

It’s very sad, but just about every NATO country has allowed themselves to be invaded.

NATO no longer has a purpose.

But it wouldn’t be as easy as withdrawing. We have a ton of assets in military bases.
