Growing up, I always heard of these guys as heroes. Watching Bernstein on CNN, I now question whether Nixon did anything wrong...or if this douchebag simply lied and set him up. Seriously..he is a partisan hack. Is anything we were taught in school accurate? Starting to doubt...

Bernstein has a very high opinion of himself, in a lot of areas

According to screenwriter Wm Goldman (Butch Cassidy), Bernstein wrote an early draft of the ATPM script, w/his then-GF Nora Ephron. Goldman: "I can't speak for real life of course, but in their script draft, Bernstein was definitely catnip to the ladies".

Bernstein actually wrote the best scene in ATPM, where the cons his way into a female witness' apartment and tricks info out of her. And you know what? It never happened. It was added b/c Bernstein felt his character didn't have enough to do (Redford/Woodward is the one who meets "Deep Throat"). So Bernstein invented this scene to make himself look more heroic.

What Nixon did is nothing compared to what obama did.

Nixon had nothing to do with Watergate. No one, even on the left, claims he had anything to do with it. It was an operation being ran by some rogue RNC people trying to get dirt on the Dems for the upcoming election.

So why did they go after him? Because they hated him dating back to his time in Congress when he sat on the House Unamerican Activities Committee. While he wasn't as fervent of a commie hunter as Sen. McCarthy, he still was one of the prominent people in Congress on top of the subject (Nixon served in both the House and Senate). Nixon personally helped identify Alger Hiss as a Soviet agent and the elite left hated him for it ever since.

If it had been a Dem president in office when some DNC guys broke into an RNC building, no one in the press would have given a shite, especially if it were known the prez had nothing to do with it.

If Trump and Hannity told you that the moon was made of silver colored coal, you'd believe that too, right?

Only partially accurate - this 'rogue' agency was trying to "fix the leaks," ergo "Plumbers."

The DEMs were leaking truly sensitive information that was getting our Intelligence Assets revealed and killed in foreign lands. The plumbers were specifically after the sources of the Pentagon Papers leak when they broke into the Watergate.

Of course, that information would have proved useful in an election campaign, but that was a purely secondary motive. They didn't need any 'dirty tricks' to defeat Mondale. Nothing they did was motivated by 'winning an election.'

The nation would have been much better off had Nixon not been involved with the coverup of the operation. Nixon was a great President taken down by this MINOR transgression.

The biggest legacy of Watergate was that it made the real future culprits add additional layers of 'plausible deniability' to their nefarious activities. Hence the near impossibility of 'getting the goods' on truly pernicious people like Hillary and Barack.

Nixon was a neophyte compared the the modern day 'behind the curtain' operatives.

You are correct. Fake News didn't start with the Trump Presidency. It was firmly in place in the 60s. Social media and Trump only exposed it

The worst legacy of Woodward/Braindead was to give two generations of 'wanna be famous too" journalists the ultimate goal of taking down a President - by any means necessary.

What we have now is the culmination of that grooming. The goal is to take down a POTUS - facts and events and significance have no importance unless is relates to the achieving that goal.

Ben Bradlee's various memoirs are fascinating reading. They all implied at times that Deepthroat was a composite of several figures but then changed their tune after Felt chose to come forward on his deathbed. But Felt really doean't hold up as the sole aource. He and Woodward had a working relationship from prior stories but from all accounts Deepthroat first approached Bernstein and resisted the addition of a second reporter. Bradlee's contempt for Bernstein comes through loud and clear in his willingness to scrap the story rather than let Bernstein fly solo.

Some of us have know these guys were hacks since the early 1970's. Clinton and Obama made Nixon look like a Cub Scout, but W & B were eerily quiet during those years.

True - but it was more subtle and less pervasive. There were genuine journalists who perhaps unknowingly slanted their coverage to the left, something hard, if not impossible, to avoid.

BUT - there was not whole news organizations devoted to the mission of destruction to the exclusion of their 'presumed' validity. I try to switch over to CNN/MSNBC once in a while just to take the temperature.

But, I cannot stand to watch that shite show for more than a few minutes. It is unwatchable for anyone not drinking the kool-aid. There is not even a semblance of fairness or integrity. You know they are all lying to themselves, as will as their audience.

I find myself watching more and more Science Channel these days. "BattleBots" is pretty entertaining. "How the Universe Works" is informative, but I have seen most of it several times. "Unearthed" is quite compelling these days. All still better than watching Hannity or anything on other MSM.

I'm currently reading "Family of Secrets" about the"Bush Dynasty" as the author calls it. There is a huge section on Watergate, saying it was a CIA op and it was bungled so amateurishly that it was obviously intended as a way to take down Nixon. I question though, why would they do something like that knowing they could/would go to jail, in order to take down Nixon? It seems more likely that the mission explanation a few posts back makes more sense, and ensnaring Nixon was just a side bonus. Still, why were they so bad at burglary? The book also claims that Woodward was one of the CIA journalist plants, whose job was to expose Nixon's involvement.
