ATLANTA—A dozen candidates fighting to be the next mayor of Atlanta crammed inside a union hall on a recent Thursday night. The moderator of the public forum, a black talk radio host named Rashad Richey, instructed the candidates to answer his questions by holding up a small sign that on one side said “yes” and on the other said “no.” He asked them whether they supported raising the minimum wage for city employees to $15 an hour and whether public money should subsidize billion-dollar stadiums. Then he turned to the topic of law enforcement: “Do you believe that police target or racially profile black and brown males in the community?”

In Atlanta, a city that boasts of being the birthplace of the civil rights movement, this is not a question that politicians are generally unprepared to answer. Indeed, nearly all of the candidates quickly raised their “yes” signs. One of them, a white city councilwoman named Mary Norwood, didn't. With her sign resting on her lap, the petite 65-year-old politician, a resident of the affluent, predominantly white neighborhood of Buckhead, sought clarification: “Atlanta or the country?” Annoyed that she had disrupted the format, Richey fired back: “Let me just ask you: Do you think people in Atlanta racially profile?” An awkward silence filled the room until Norwood started explaining, not entirely clearly, that, “it’s not a Pandora’s box. It’s really important …” As people in the audience hollered from their seats, Richey cut her off and moved on to the next question.

So perhaps it should come as a surprise that a woman who has struggled to speak decisively on one of the most prominent and divisive subjects confronting her city is actually leading the race—by a lot. And if she wins on November 7, Norwood, who holds a double-digit lead in the polls, would be the first white mayor of Atlanta in more than four decades. It turns out that the explanation for Norwood’s electoral advantage has less to do with her platform than the changing face of one of the most dynamic and important cities in the American South.

Can we imagine the shaming that would be taken place if this was a white Mecca and a question mark on electing a black person to office?

Wait, we saw it with Obama.

Wait, I was told black folks don't have the same opportunities as the rest of us crackers.

Police target criminals. It's not the police's fault that 6% of the US population (black males) are committing 50%+ of the violent crime.

What are the police supposed to do? Ignore black men committing crimes? Arrest innocent white people just to "even out" the numbers?

Getting Norwood elected would be probably be awesome for this city.

My guess is she is leading because she isn’t one of the cookie cutter candidates who all answer the same way on everything.

That gets her to the runoff but may not get her elected.

It would; but it won't happen.

As teke said, she'll have enough support to make the runoff because there are so many people running, but then she won't see much, if any, increase in votes in the runoff.

I think Kwanza Hall is the most likely next mayor, and a good many of my white liberal friends who live in town are supporting him. It does amaze me though that all of those people thought a white woman was ready to be president, but they aren't ready for a white woman to be their mayor.

Yeah, let's see if that holds up.

What makes you say that?

I will say that they've started with the "Mary the republican" slander already. This is going to be one hell of a mud slinging election.

Why not. I know some folks in the business and religious sectors down there and most seem to have a high opinion of her.

I defer to my white twin Pettifogger on this matter, though.

Not certain of that, she lost to a stronger candidate in Reed by a handful of votes last time.

The good news is that Kwanza is doing pretty terribly, the bad news is that Bottoms, who is incompetent, is doing well. I think a lot of your EAV type liberal whites are going to vote for Fort.

I wish Norwood and Felicia Moore could run in tandem and more openly.

Officially Indy with a blue-dog streak. Pushes for fiscal responsibility and accountability, a cut in city spending, and opposed the last round of property tax increases.

She's heavily favored by Atlanta LEOs and has been for some time. She's pals with Felicia Moore, who is Reed's arch nemesis and represents how black Democrat doesn't necessarily have to mean hostile to white residents. Good ties to the Atlanta business community, far outside of the arguably corrupt City Hall dynasty of late.

She's progressive enough that she certainly won't halt any of the millennial-targeted development in the City, but she won't treat Buckhead with utter contempt, either.
