Seems like the state is helping New Orleans with financing , national guard etc and would go along In consolidating the civil and criminal clerks. I like Moreno but this is a bad decision.

I think a lot of folks just dislike Cantrell more than they genuinely like Moreno.
I suspect this will become apparent as time passes.

Cantrell was term limited.

It’s really the other way. The state is looking to do away with a position that has long existed. It’s probably not a bad idea to reduce the number of judges and the separate criminal clerk of court, but it’s the state that is seeking change the status quo.

I look forward to 4cubbies’ insight on this.
I’m sure you can anticipate my insight. This administration doesn’t respect local democratic governance.
quote:
If the council “attempts to install an ‘interim clerk’ and additionally to call an illegal election, I will certainly be required to act,” pursuant to state law, “to prevent the council and its interim appointee from interfering with the lawful officeholder’s exercise of her duties.”
I wonder what would make an election illegal. I’m not familiar with all the statutes around holding an election or the legislature’s ability to retroactively nullify an election and appoint someone else to assume the duties of the office they nullified.

Murrill, though, called the council’s action “legally misguided.” She pointed to the portion of Act 15 that transfers all powers from the clerk of criminal court to the Orleans Parish civil district court clerk, “who shall thereafter be referred to as the clerk of court for the parish of Orleans,” the law reads.
“The Legislature did not create a new office for which there is no incumbent,” Murrill wrote to the council. Instead, she said, the law grants the civil clerk - Napoleon - the combined seat.

And her replacement is going to be held to incredibly low standards for the first year or two…. But eventually people will measure Moreno against good mayors instead of against Cantrell

Does the City Council calling an election when it doesn’t have that authority not strike you as illegal? The Clerk of Court position is created by state law, not a city ordinance.

I’m honestly not familiar with all the local and state statutes around elections.

Why does any city have an election for this position? Why doesn’t the state apppint every clerk?

Just FYI, I’ve been critical of Moreno for years. I’m not impressed by her at all. I wanted Arthur Hunter for mayor.

Local democratic governance are a bunch of losers

This should have been done back in 2005 when Orleans Parish population dropped below the mandatory minimum requirement to have two different clerks. Its still below the mandatory population so the state is doubling down and forcing the issue.

This administration doesn’t respect local democratic governance.
Did you have this same passion when SCOTUS created a "right" out of whole cloth with its Roe v Wade decision, ignoring the state positions? Did you celebrate when the states later regained control via Dobbs?
Do you believe decisions should always be controlled at the lowest level possible, or just when it aligns with your preferred outcome?

Moreno is just pandering. She endorsed the guy who lost.

“Suddenly”? I can only speak for myself. I’ve always been a proponent of local democratic governance. I don’t know what tribal politics has to do with me or anything I support.

Yes. I’ve always been critical of Roe.

Yeah, NO's status. Only city with 2 in state for sure....its a scam of costing the city double

“Only city with 2 in state for sure....its a scam of costing the city double”
Like I said, it’s probably not a bad idea, but it’s a state initiative to do away with having two positions.

When, EXACTLY, did New Orleans have a good mayor?

There is zero reason for Orleans to have a completely separate and redundant clerk for the criminal docket. Waste of money, so it’s gone.

It’s a Parish office, and they are elected in all 64 parishes.
New Orleans isn’t special and doesn’t require two Clerk’s offices. It’s grift.
