It’s a legacy hostility from the WWII era and Fascist Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union’s “Motherland”.
Most modern American Leftists probably don’t even know the full history for sure except to equate the word with Hitler and “bad” so anything that is against socialism is “Fascist”.

Yep, and also from the Spanish Civil War, when the Soviet agents in Spain labeled any opponents or dissidents as "fascists." Good Spanish Socialists who weren't sufficiently pro-Soviet Russia found out that they too were "fascists" and got disappeared.

Same reason MAGA uses Communist or Socialist as a catch-all for anything they don't agree with—-

There are literally factions of the Democrat party that refer to themselves as socialists/communists. Ie the DSA. None on the Right refer to themselves as fascists.

Everything a liberal says is a lie, and most of it is meant as a defection. They are essentially communists at heart, so they use the term fascist to deflect attention away from that fact.
