I think because most people these days are saving and investing on their own so they don't have to worry about social security.

Because it will never go away. They'll just up the taxes to keep it afloat. Unfortunately those are going to be some big increases when it has to happen.

As much as I like to shite on Boomers, I actually don't have an issue with this. You were made promises, and short of extreme circumstances, those promises should be kept as best as possible.

I think the only way to fix the system is to bite the bullet and create a phase out paradigm in which young people don't pay in while the current/pending payouts are paid for by spending cuts. It would be extremely hard for a decade or so, but it's the only reasonable fix.

And for that very reason it will never be privatized to end up like trump air or trump university. .

Or the whims of the NYSE.

If anything, everyone will have to take a percentage less than they should.

Patently? Meh. Kind of, yes.

It will be insolvent by 2035 IIRC if nothing is changed. By changing it I mean reducing payouts or increasing age. It will probably be there- assuming someone touches that third rail by 2035. It's a big game of chicken.

Because we're run by baby boomers that will receive SS benefits.

Don't worry, I have time to worry about gender neutral pronouns and bathrooms, Social Security, and likely still have as much or more saved for retirement than you had at my age

i think it's a forgone conclusion that SS won't be there by the time that i (35 y.o., at least 20 more years of work) retire, but that doesn't mean that i'm not okay with paying into it....

i care about those that need it right now, the generations before us, that set up the country that i can enjoy today... without their work and sacrifice, who knows what America would be like today, plus, just on a humanistic level, it's okay to help others outside ourselves, even if that means that we have to take the "L"...

I agree with most of that.

But I think we both agree it's setup as a slow moving depreciating Ponzi scheme. The longer it goes on the less and less it becomes sustainable. You can only reduce payments or increase age so much to keep it afloat indefinitely.

You mean the people that got us into this financial mess to begin with? You do realize we are $20 trillion in debt.

Its hard to take young people seriously when they correctly complain about exploding deficits while simultaneously politically supporting or PUSHING nearly every new spending idea the left can dream up.

Because I knew the 1st day of my 1st job that I would never see what I put in. I wasn't swindled, I was robbed with advance notice.
