I would venture to guess the vast majority of Americans, both Republicans and democrats and regardless of their ethnic background use this term on a regular basis. It’s common, everyday vernacular that is used to describe anything that is dump. You can feign outrage all day long about the use of the term, but the average person is not shocked when they hear it. They aren’t even outraged. They just shrug their shoulders and immediately know exactly what you’re talking about.

It's not. Just faux outrage from the left.

It's racist to bring up the terrible living conditions in Haiti and Africa.

The word is not controversial. The way it was used by the leader of the Free world was.

So if the leader of the free world says what every one else knows and is thinking it’s controversial? New Orleans is a shithole. Most everyone readily acknowledges that fact, even most of the posters here. If Trump calls New Orleans a shithole, am I supposed to be outraged? How about all the posters here? Are they going to be irate and demand an apology because he echoed their sentiments? Sure the truth hurts, but it’s much better than just lying about these places.

I hold my president to a higher standard than myself because I am not the face of America.

Because liberals have repressed their own racism and associate shithole conditions with the predominant skin color of the inhabitants of said shithole.

The concept that POTUS would just write off country, a continent for that matter, and its millions of people as having no promise or worth is just wrong for a leader to do.

History has shown that turning a blind eye to "shitholes" and failing to pursue policies to help those countries fix their systemic problems will not turn out well for us.

Mexico
Cuba
Haiti
Afghanistan
Germany
Russia
Yugoslavia

How many times to we have to learn that political instability will ultimately have a negative impact on our global interests. We don't live in a vacuum, and "ignore it. It's a shithole." is ignorant, lazy public policy.

Especially if we pour billions into said shitholes over decades.

Spend billions over decades to avoid bloodshed and trillions in lost economic value. See Marshall Plan.

If we hadn't abandoned Afghanistan after they won our covert war against the USSR, we might still have the twin towers standing and we wouldn't be stuck in the middle of longest US war in history.

The "shithole" plan is a a guaranteed failure. The Marshall Plan has a decent track record of success.

You are really using those countries as examples of shitholes we have turned a blind eye to? How many billions do we give to Mexico, Haiti and Afghanistan alone? Our policies towards Cuba has kept that country in the 1950's in terms of development. Now take a look at a place like Vietnam. Look at what out policies did to that country in the 60's and 70's and look where it is today without those same policies in place. Vietnam is growing rapidly in terms of development and is not the same shithole it was 40 years ago.
