Russia was a backwater in Imperial Europe. They weren't seen as equals and often lesser royals were sent there for marriage.
Again, there is a reason Russian literature and film is so dour and bleak and filled with existential dread. It's not because Russia is known for being a great place to live

Putin's threat of using nukes.
NATO isn't fully participating. If they were, this wouldn't be close. They would have owned the sea and sky within a week and Russia would have been fricked.
Russia is doing what Russia always does: throw men at the military objective. They have a lot of meatsuits to use.
