rump said he could make the military great again and still spend less while doing it. I hope he and Mattis follow through with that but I have my doubts.

That wouldn't be due the the massive increase in military spending would it?

Luxury? Are you sure you understand SS?

Do you understand our military?

Because you've demonstrated so far in this thread that you understand precisely squat about it.

Answer my question: Why is SS luxury and the bloated military a necessity?

One is specified in the Constitution, the other isn't.

Our military needs a structural overhaul. GT23 has some good ideas.

Did the constitution say we need to spend x hundred billions of dollars?

Answer my question: did I say a global military is a necessity? No, I did not. And that point seems to be sailing far over your head. They're both luxuries of an extraordinarily wealthy and advanced society. You can ethically cut both.

Drop all the weighted adjectives.

With no changes, SS will go bankrupt within decades. We already borrow money to meet our CURRENT SS obligations. So whatever your emotional attachments are to the program, it will either change or die.

This is my opinion, but part of the difference between our military and those of China, Russia, etc. is that China and Russia kill everyone in sight with impunity, while the United States ducks and dodges around so as to not hurt innocent people.

That system is inefficient, therefore much more costly.

Also, I doubt those other countries have 20-year retirements and healthy pensions for those who served.

As i said, military is forced welfare. You dont need that level of retirement and pension.

Maybe we should punt everyone over to the military mega-thread
Nah. Pretty sure that by the end of that one it just consisted of WH, Displaced, and GT23 conspiring to kill Whiskey Papa and hide his body. It went off the rails about halfway through.

Forced: who is 'forcing' anyone to join the military these days?

welfare: these people in the military are providing a service and being compensated for said service... welfare such as food stamps and medicaid is provided to people simply for being alive.

Not sure how you can ethically cut SS.

Easy pay back every living citizen what they are owed and don't take it out of anyone's paycheck anymore... that's how you do it ethically. Debt will go down.

Obviously changes will have to happen in phases and by age-groups. I imagine older people nearing retirement will be largely exempt from any changes considering political reality (old people are a powerful voting bloc) and the consideration that they've largely planned their lives around a certain expectation. Guys with 20 or 30 years left in the work force are going to be another matter.

Its forced because we are forced to believe its a necessity when it really isnt. Its welfare because we are helping the needy into thinking we are teaching them to fish when in reality we are sitting the majority down and feeding them fish anyways.

I believe repaying the debt starts with cutting non-essential functions. Arts? Sure cut it, but 1B is nothing.

Do we really need all the equipment? Do we really need all the personnel? I read that even if we cut military spending by HALF, we are still the largest spenders?

There you go folks, you want lower taxes? You want to pay debts? Cut the military.

The defense of this country is the most important thing the government is responsible for. Cut it some, sure.

But I would gut every other program before getting anywhere near half. Screw all the "entitlement" programs. All you are entitled to in this country is the opportunity to make something of yourself. Hunger is a great motivator. Cut that shite out and you will have people wanting to get to work.

All the government should be involved in is the defense of the nation, a well maintained interstate system, a food and drug administration to make sure the things that are sold are safe. Everything else should he handled by charities.

You mention that even if we spent half we would still be one of the largest spenders? Great, because more than half the world hates us.
