Ya, no. That becomes a straight up welfare program at that point. A pure transfer of wealth from one group to another.

No, it doesn't, it tuerns it into what it's supposed to be: Retirement INSURANCE.

It's there if you need it, if you don't, you don't take it. You know, like insurance.

Because conservatives use flag waving and military hero worship to build their "patriotic" brand.

Why should the federal government be in the business of providing retirement benefits? SS at this point is the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. By the time I retire, all the money that's been taken from me will have gone to baby boomers who decided not to invest and rely on SS to retire. I should have a choice as to where my money is invested. And you say the military is forced welfare?

The Social Security Act (Act of August 14, 1935) [H. R. 7260]

An act to provide for the general welfare by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits, and by enabling the several States to make more adequate provision for aged persons, blind persons, dependent and crippled children, maternal and child welfare, public health, and the administration of their unemployment compensation laws; to establish a Social Security Board; to raise revenue; and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

I get it. But conservative doctrine seems to not apply to the military:
1.) Government spending is the root of all evil...Except lets raise the military budget every year we are in office.
2.) The government is terrible at providing health insurance! They have no business doing so! Except...lets have a massive bureaucracy in charge of delivering insurance to all active duty and their dependents. TRICARE!!
3.) People compensated by the federal government are so overpaid and inefficient!! Drain the swamp!! Except for military who should receive massive pensions, GI bill, healthcare for life, raises every year even during pay freezes.

SSDI is a racket and should be severely overhauled. It's the new welfare.

SSRI gets all the attention, but SSDI is where the fat goes.

I'd like to see that citation.

Someone has already posted it. Provide for the common defense. Look it up. Doesn't matter if it is communism in Korea and Vietnam, or Islamic atrocities in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, or Iran. Our federal government is mandated by the Constitution to be able to take care of the problem. One at a time, or all at once if need be.

You're honestly comparing the job of the military with a government civilian?

Seriously?

This too.

The basic answer is baseline budgeting and the automatic increase of whatever is in the federal budget. We should take the George Bernard Shaw approach to federal programs… of course he was talking about people though.

Why not? Half the time they are interchangable and work the same jobs. What % of military folks are infrantry? Vehicle operators? Pilots?

The majority of military jobs can be performed by civilians and contractors for far less lifetime cost.

This is completely incorrect.

"Some" may be accurate. "Half the time" and "the majority" are not.
