The parents of this psycho called the police and told them he was going crazy, the police failed yet again.

So - once again - the push will be to take guns away from the people who didn't do this.
The cops can do virtually NOTHING to prevent, particularly violent, crime - about the best they can do is deter it by their presence/existence, and conduct investigations which lead to incarcerating the offenders. Once in a blue moon they actually stop or interrupt a crime in progress.
This is one of the main reasons why those people in disarmed areas are more heavily victimized by violent criminals - government claims a monopoly on force in those areas, yet cannot guarantee citizens' safety (because that's impossible and would be a lie, anyway) - so the criminals arm themselves (what do they care about the laws?), the police are armed, but the vast pool of citizen/victims aren't. Sounds like a great plan.

Mental health screens before procreation. Mental health screens to vote. Mental health screens to drive a car. Mental health screens to get married. Mental health screens before running for public office.

I agree here. Why have they not just used basic statistics on gun crime?

I do believe that the OP's question has merit. After all, I do believe that everyone can agree that we do not want "crazy" people who will hurt people to have access to firearms.
However, there are lots of people that have some sort of mental issue(s) that are not dangerous. I think the best argument against denying access to firearms to people with mental issues is that people who do have issues will choose not to seek medical attention for their mental issues if they fear they will lose their guns.
For example, a soldier returns from a combat zone with PTSD. I think everyone agrees that the soldier should receive the medical attention he/she may need. We do not want to risk people not going to a doctor because they fear they will be labeled as "crazy" and lose their guns.
Also remember this, most people that kill would not be considered "crazy" and most people considered "crazy" never hurt anyone.

this elliot rodger kid WAS smart though. the police came and questioned him and found him to be just fine.
if they had searched his room though, he says they would have "ended everything"

I would think that an organization that prides itself in standing up for legal gun owners would make this a priority to help prevent the crazies from getting guns and harming people.
The NRA is about one thing and one thing only: selling guns. They are propagandists for gun manufacturers, nothing more.

What has changed?
Why all of a sudden do we find ourselves in a predicament with crazy and guns?
