Dude there is no such animal as a "sensible Muslim". When it comes to Muslims and how they deal with infidels (that's you and me) there are three groups.
1) First Group would simply drive the infidel men into the ocean and turn their women into sex slaves. They would keep the boys for pleasure, and subject the young girls to FGM then "marry" them off to Abdullah (they're all named Abdullah)
2) Second Group would behead (or shoot) the infidel men on the spot, then rape their women and behead them. But maybe keep a few as slaves to share. Same treatment for the young boys and girls as in # 1.
3) Third Group would simply stand,watch,and repeat "Allahu Adbar" over and over and over. Then procreate to the point where they are the majority and elect their pals to public office. Think Ilhan Omar. This is the group operating in the USA now. Eventually this group gets accused of being soft on the infidels and gets taken over by militant Abdullahs from Group # 1 or Group # 2. And so forth and so on.

From their general perspective, why would they?
The muslim majority countries fully embrace Islam as it is. And the muslims in western countries are given a protective status above the status of everyone else in those countries. To the point where laws are changed to make muslims feel like they are in one of the Muslim dominated countries.
There's zero incentive to reform. It's completely accepted in most countries.

According to Islam, every Christian that breathes is a supreme insult to Allah and the Prophet.
First off, a Muslim will tell you that you Christians have it all wrong. Christ was only a prophet who told us that MOHAMMED will follow Christ in the form of the Paraclete. Christ spoke of the Paraclete to come and THAT is Mohammed. So, right there, you Christians insult the Prophet, and you insult Jesus because you have distorted Jesus's true message.
THEN you Christians insult Almighty Allah with this blasphemous idea that Almighty Allah incarnated Himself into Jesus Christ - A MAN??? And THEN the Christians claim that God Incarnate allowed himself to be beaten and crucified for the salvation of humankind? Islam teaches that Allah would never do that and it is an insult to believe that He would do that.
So, I ask you, why wouldn't every Muslim want to kill every Christian when everything that a Christian believes is a blasphemous insult to both Allah and His Prophet?? Do you think that the Muslims should ignore the Quran and instead tolerate these blasphemous insults? Maybe the cowards and the weakling Muslims will but the young strong lions of Islam will not.
The Christians and the Jews will one day come to understand that there can be no peace until they stop this insulting and blasphemous Unbelief. They think that the Muslims will stop being Muslims. Please rest assured, this is impossible.

My understanding is that “people of the Book” (the Abrahamic religions) are treated quite differently in the Qur’an versus the treatment of polytheists. If you refer to the Sword Verse, in context it seems to be a tactical instruction in one particular war between early Muslims and one specific group of polytheists, as opposed to. strategic instruction for dealing with all non-Muslims in all circumstances.
Of course, many Muslims are better at memorizing isolated verses than at understanding and interpreting them. It s a common problem across many religions. Cherry-picked verses taken out of context from almost any religious text can be interpreted to justify almost any behavior.

It is my understanding that the most-accurate (succinct) translation of the Arabic phrasing would refer to “polytheists” rather than “infidels.” That term would not include the members of any of the Abrahamic religions ... such as Christians and Jews.
The problem is that Arabic is a very flowery language, never using one word when thirty words would serve the same purpose and that most verses of the Qur’an are overly-so ... even for a text written in Arabic. It makes accurate translation rather tedious.

Why reform when Western countries will bend over backwards to accommodate you and stifle any criticism of your religion as "hate speech." Islam is literally taking over the Western world without firing a shot.

Jihad and the way they treat non Muslims is fundamental doctrine within that religion as stated in the Koran and Hadith.
The idea that Islam needs a reformation is a western idea imposed on that religion from the perspective of Christian moral law.
The only reformation of Islam can occur when its five pillars are made untenable by external forces.

That's because you are looking at this as an anamoly in history instead of the reality of what Islam has done throughout its history with short pauses when the west held the upper hand militarily (during the crusader states existence and post World War I with the destruction of the Ottoman Empire).

Wikipedia actually contains a decent precis of relevant scholarship related to the Sword Verse. No, it is not a primary source ... only a compilation, but not a bad one.
You will note that some scholars translate the term/phrase as “idolators” and others as “polytheists,” both of which exclude Christians and Jews. None of them seems to use the term “infidels.”. Most seem to agree that the verse should be read in the context of one military campaign against one, specific group of polytheists/idolators and not as a global instruction for the treatment of all Muslims in all places and in all circumstances.
Again, less well-read Muslims do tend to interpret the Sword Verse much as it is represented on this thread. Such illiteracy is certainly a problem.
