Why do we say ‘die for your country’ instead of ‘kill for your country’?

Someone signs up for the military and you here ‘willing to go die for my country’

What good does someone going off to die do for us?

Why don’t they say ‘willing to go kill for my country’?

If you're willing to kill for your country would you also be willing to die?

Cause all positions in the military require you to be ready to lay down your life.

They don't all require you to kill

Because dying for ones' country is the ultimate sacrifice, not killing someone else.

Patton said it best. Something along the lines of "make them die for theirs"

Patton did say that.

He said “nobody ever won a war by dying for his country, you win a war by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country”.

Okay then, be an accessory to killing.

Marines do not adhere to this creed
our saying is, "our job is not to die for our country, our job is to insure that the enemy dies for his..."

You a veteran or current military? Every one of us signed that check. Some got cashed, some didn't but we all knew we could die. A typing clerk can be called into the field. So yeah it's accurate. Now what you choose to believe in your non military mind is different

Unfortunately, many politicians have no problem being killers for "freedom"

Freedom to them is money and power

Or “serve your country.” Hence, joining “the service.”

I was a draftsman sitting behind my comfy desk. I became a 50 cal gunner at someone's request. Sitting atop a vehicle mounted killing machine.
