Why do so many federal agencies need to be HQ'd in Washington DC?

Why do federal agencies that aren't directly involved with our executive, legislative, or judicial branches end up based in Washington DC?

The costs of living are exceptionally high there.

Couldn't the Department of Interior, Department of Agriculture, or Bureau of Land Management be relocated to flyover cities like St. Louis or Detroit? Couldn't the Federal Maritime Commission be based in New Orleans? Why not move the EPA to cancer alley (Baton Rouge)?

The FBI wants new digs to replace the Hoover building. Let's build it in Memphis or Oklahoma City! They could enjoy the same standard of living in either city with substantially lower compensation.

It seems like this would help provide good jobs to economically distressed areas AND reduce the compensation requirements for federal employees - as they'd now live in an area with a low costs of living.

Many of the career bureaucrats would quit rather than relocate - so win-win for the taxpayer.

They don't.

Trump is trying to deconsolidate them and they are fricking howling about it.

Probably one of the reasons for the impeachment bullshite.

They can't all get together and sniff their own farts if they're spread out.

How dare you question your bureaucratic betters?

They don't and at least half of them don't need to exist anywhere.

I think a better question is 'Why do so many federal agencies need to be?'

I suppose many of these agencies work together a lot, therefore it would be helpful to be close to one another. It’s the same way in every state.

FBI is moving all their non-essential Washington staff down here to Huntsville, AL. Shelby worked out some drug deal. It’s good by me since my RE is going through the roof.

Seems like Detroit would be a great place for the FBI. Or Cleveland.

They need a lot of corruption to keep them busy, and they need a decent airport.

Ive heard support for such a proposal on both sides of the aisle. Another good reason is that it forces the workers in these gov't offices to actually be a part of the communities they are governing as opposed to living and working in the DC bubble.

Would be nice to be thought of as a citizen instead of a subject.

I have long since advocated for a search for the most rock star accountant in the country. When you find this individual, put them on the floor of the Capital One Arena, in DC. At their desk is a calculator, a highlighter, a red pen and a copy of the Constitution.

Have the head of every Gov't department bring their most recent budget and line up at the desk.

The Accountant will ask the head of the department provide a 3 sentence mission statement. The purpose of that dept will then be compared to the Constitution.

If it it provided for as a responsibility of the Federal Government, then they will move on to the next phase, and examine the budget, line-by-line, and ensure that the department is acting faithfully and efficiently.

If that department is NOT in the Constitution, then the Accountant will hand the department head a piece of paper with the phone numbers to the general switchboard of each of the 50 states' legislatures. They are welcome to seek funding for their department at the state level, but have until the following September 30th to vacate DC.

But will it be good when they vote for Doug Jones instead of Tuberville?

Do the same with state agencies. Baton Rouge real estate is high, and traffic and crime are bad.

Let Bunkie, Winnfield, and Monroe house a few agencies. They need the jobs.

Put some federal offices in Beloit, Kansas...Hondo, Texas...Minot, North Dakota. That'll weed out the filth real quick.
