“There are none but temporary Truth-Seekers; a permanent one is a human impossibility; as soon as the Seeker finds what he is thoroughly convinced is the Truth, he seeks no further, but gives the rest of his days to hunting junk to patch it and caulk it and prop it with, and make it weather-proof and keep it from caving in on him.”

Because a lone democracy and people surrounded by enemies on all sides that wish them extinction need a friend and ally, and we are that friend and ally. And finally, because Israel does more to keep us up to speed on threats to this nation that they many times exceed what we gather from our own intelligence agencies, and that keeps America safe.

The American Jews have done a great job romanticizing their frontier struggle and linking it to America’s (which is not a stretch). This has been done through books, movies and journalism. Start with Charlton Heston in Exodus, for example.

A second factor is that a lot of American Christians believe that in order to get the Second Coming of Christ, Israel must succeed. (I’m no expert on that so I might have that screwed up.)

Even though I understand all of that, I am part of a third set of Israel supporters whose support is due to Israel being civilized moderns arrayed against barbarians. I am in favor of wresting control of the American government from Israel but continuing to support them in their struggle against religious autocrats.

So you can see it’s complicated.

Why is it so hard for many Americans, especially the religious right, to understand that

I guess the same reason that it is so hard for so many Americans, especially the immature "Merca First!" parrots, to understand that in the foreign policy game of chess, Israel is a strategic piece that it benefits the US to support. The benefit greatly outweighs what we give them.

I think the quality of thought has deteriorated so much in the US lately that lots of people can't connect any dots anymore, no matter how simple. Because they follow idiots like Tucker Carlson around sniffing his butt, not realizing that he's intentionally stirring discord because it benefits him financially to do so.

Why is that our problem? How does a powerful Iran threaten us? They are a regional threat and that's it.

A powerful Iran would control the Persian Gulf. Do you understand the importance of that? That is a direct threat against a significant amount of world’s energy. And a powerful, unchecked Iran would dominate the Middle East, extending its control to the Suez Canal.

We only support Israel to have an attack dog in the region. It has nothing to do with "god"

The US pays Israel for restraint, we need to stop doing that.

There are a few other variables that likely come into play as well. Eventually, in one way or another, to some degree or another. One of which being an emboldened Iran’s outlook on their nuclear program. Also a very possible implication would be the net effect on this apparent “alliance” being hatched between Russia, China, Iran and to some degree North Korea as well, i.e. does that scenario add some meaningful cachet to that “axis of evil”. Just items for consideration.

Honest answer to your question is that many Americans are members of protestant denominations who follow the belief of "dispensationalism" which asserts that Jews and Christians will be brought to salvation under different plans/rules, and that Jews are God's Chosen People who will be saved regardless of their belief in Christ, so it follows that anyone who espouses a dispensational doctrine would want to support Israel in everything they do.

Not all Christians hold to this doctrine. Some Christians actually read and study their Bibles and understand that the dispensational doctrine is not taught anywhere in the scriptures, and is little more than a political doctrine claiming to have biblical roots and authority.

On a non-religious basis, Americans have been taught (rightly or wrongly) that most of the nations in the Middle East are strongly anti-American and instigators of terrorism, and that only Israel is a reliable ally in this region.
