Chernobyl. Gorbachev is quoted saying he believes it was the cause.

This is an important point that some people disregard.
For all that is made of "culture wars" in the US, the exportation of American culture is a huge key to US hegemony around the world. There is serious geopolitical value in things as seemingly irrelevant as blue jeans and popular music. The United States can "force project" from a cultural standpoint in ways that no other nation or empire has ever been able to.

The entire reason in a nutshell.
Russia has more untapped resources than any nation on earth. The problem? No way to get on site and no way to bring them to market. Infrastructure is severely lacking in Russia.

That’s what communism is in practice. The revolution simply serves the function of creating a new aristocracy.

At the end, Gorbachev was not willing to kill his people in order to stay in power. If the same circumstances faced Lenin, Stalin or other old Bolsheviks, they would have had no problem killing millions in order to stay in power. We must not forget that if we allow the Communists like Bernie Sanders and AOC to gain power.

Jordan Peterson has a beautiful talk on this somewhere on the web. In short, someone MUST be the “oppressor” in order for communist ideology to sustain popularity. As one group after the next we’re sent off to the gulags, eventually there was no one left outside of their narrow span of control to blame. They quickly turned their guns on each other.
China survived almost certain doom in the 70’s and 80’s by adopting a significant number capitalist ideas and principles. They are more “single party” government than they are pure communists.

China hasn't collapsed because they're a authoritarian communist regime that uses its cheap labor for international capitalism.

Because communism is an inferior system that kills the human spirit and the ingenuity that drives technological and economic advances.
China adapted in the late 80s with Deng Xiaoping. Look up “socialism with Chinese characteristics”. It’s basically the good parts of capitalism
The knockoff was a harbinger of things to come

Don’t know why you’ve been given more downvotes than upvotes for this, but anyone who discounts this at least playing a supporting role (not the primary role) is completely ignorant of the later decade of the Cold War.
Lots of the younger USSR crowd wanted part of what they age segment was able to experience in the 80s USA. Also, interestingly, some US business people would do consulting in the Soviet bloc during the Cold War, and Soviet “residents” (held behind the walls with machine guns) would see Americans in their own country enjoying their beaches and living an easy life while they toiled away in labor and hunger.
It was tough enough for the Russian Communist leadership to compete with the US economically and militarily, but then they were feeling pressure from its own citizens who wanted a taste of things like music videos, McDonalds and Colacola.

The USSR Communist World Order attempt was already starting to come apart at the seems in the 70s when Jimmy Carter came in and gave them some hope.
But Reagan then came in and squashed it, through both strength but also enough diplomacy with Gorbachev. I tend to think Gorbachev’s wife had a soft heart for the Western world freedoms and had more influence on her husband than previous Soviet “presidents”.

Mercantilist is the word you’re looking for. They more resemble the 15th/16th century Spanish empire than anything Marx or Lenin envisioned or a modern capitalist liberal democracy.
