world superpower
This was their problem. Not enough resources, shitty economics and they tried to compete with the USA.
Socialism does not grow wealth.

Arms race with the US collapsed their economy.

Because communism removes all incentive from the individual through self enrichment so force has to be used instead and eventually there's only so much blood you can draw from a stone.
ETA: that and the leaders at every level were only there based on their politicking. In private industry if nobody is buying your shite you're not going to make it.
In communism the state controls the businesses and those leadership positions were determined by party loyalty not by capability.
It's a recipe for ultimate disaster every time. Capitalism isn't perfect but it provides choice and incentive. Those two things together are what freedom and prosperity are built on.

Because their entire economic system collapsed under the pressure it imposed on itself while trying to keep up with us

I'm about as right wing as exists in 2021 outside of a political prison, but the collapse of the USSR was artificially accelerated by the influence of "developed world" media. They wanted "cooler" cars, clothing, music, etc. and made some decisions that, in hindsight, were very irrational.

China’s economy is supported by consumers looking for products at a cheap price. So, America and other western countries.
They also have businesses which “are not controlled by the government” even though, in all actuality, every Chinese corporation is a tentacle of the Chinese government. Essentially having very small elements of capitalism in a communist system.
This is a very simple answer, but I’m not an economist, or an expert in world affairs.

China is growing wealth through markets, not socialism. Reforms in the 70's opened the way for private ownership of some industry.
If you don't remember, the Chinese learned some valuable lessons in economics and central planning from the "Great Leap Forward."
Americans suck at Economics.

Correct. They learned some things from the Soviet Unions failures.

China hasn't collapsed because they're a authoritarian communist regime that uses its cheap labor for international capitalism. This spreads enough resources around to keep the country and its people placated while the regime pockets unimaginable wealth. And the magic is it erodes the working class societies of its enemies, while the elites of those societies let it happen because they get enriched too.

The entire philosophy of Chinese leadership today is that they have to be capitalist until capitalism collapses, then they will be in the best position to implement communism. They are intentionally trying to avoid a USSR collapse.
Joke's on them, though. Despite the growth, their economy is incredibly brittle and unstable. They also have a doomsday demographic crisis coming in the next 30 years.

I wouldn't call China a communist system, its more of an Authoritarian Capitalist system.
