Why does the GOP continuously cave to the Dems?

fricking maddening.

quote:

Senator Harris kicked this discussion off by reiterating her position that the Committee should not advance any more judicial nominees while the impeachment trial was pending. Four of her Democratic colleagues joined her in this sentiment and gave similar statements. Senator Hirono entered a letter to Senators McConnell and Graham requesting that judicial nominations be put on hold during the impeachment into the record. The letter was signed by a coalition of national civil rights organizations, including ACS. After voting to advance the five nominees, Senator Graham closed the meeting by declaring the Committee’s work on judicial nominations would cease until the impeachment trial is over.

This is senator's only item of business until the impeachment trial completes, it doesn't really matter, other than a jumping off point for he shouldn't get judges even if not convicted, he was still impeached.

By rule, isn’t all other business tables until the impeachment is over?

Putting it off for a couple weeks until this coup attempt is over won't matter.

Because it is the prudent thing to do.

Impeachment is of such magnitude, that all senators should be 100% focused on the non-crimes presented at trial.

Graham is a wolf in Sheep's clothing. I don't trust his post-McCain born again Trump ally act as far as I can throw it. Guy was a cucks cuck and then he buddied up to Trump after John McStain died? Nah.

Because the Senate is going to be fully focused on the impeachment trial. Sure it gives the Dems the optics of a small victory, but it is what he was supposed to do. They knew it, so they played their hand to give the illusion of a win.

The senate is under no obligation to rule to table judicial nominations during the trial.

This is just another example of the GOP caving to democratic and media pressure.

I think Senate impeachment rules prohibit committees from advancing legislation or nominations except by consent.

Cocaine Mitch doesn't give a frick. He'll shove a judicial nominee right up their asses.

There is precedent. At least one federal judge was confirmed during the Andrew Johnson impeachment and there has been no rule change since then on the matter.

The matter of consent should be navigable for the Turtle if he had the inclination to rub democratic faces in the mud.

HERE are the relevant Rules. Where do you see this alleged requirement?

Quite the opposite is true. The Rules anticipate that Senators may not initially be present and provide for later administration of the oath as individual Senators arrive.

Not exactly.

Committee and other legislative business cannot proceed while the impeachment trial is in session, but can proceed after the impeachment proceedings have been adjourned for the day. Thus, if the impeachment proceedings (for example) conclude for the day at 2 PM, other matters could be addressed for the remainder of the day. Theoretically, committee hearings could even proceed at night.

See Rules XII and XIII

No. See above.

For the life of me, I do not understand why people make definitive statements on topics as to which they obviously do not know the answer ... which only serves to mislead others.

You are entirely correct.
