OP agrees with Rodney King..."Can't we just all get along!"...of course, after he caused LA riots and sued for millions...I would not personally want to be compared with that kind of thinking...no thanks!

Russia was never our ally. They were simply trying to survive, so we worked in alignment for a time. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. But, they are not out ally. Patton understood that. Truman understood it. Everyone understood it. Nice revisionist history, though.

Hm. Well. Are you saying that had the kursk offensive failed, and Germany pushed into Moscow, thus kicking Russia out the war, freeing up their REAL troops to go to the eastern front, that we still would have won?

And yeah, we WERE allies. Now we had differences and still do. Just because we disagree on things doesn't mean we can't work together. If I hate my partner in a project but we still worked together I wouldn't look back and say oh we weren't partners in the future. Why? Bc that's a lie.

Fact is Russia won wwii. Had they not been there to absolutely grind down the wehrmacht, the war would have drawn on for far longer.

Democracy doesn't work for everyone. Sure as hell doesn't work in the middle east. Who cares if their society is as free as ours? Seems to me like you're against diversity. Just because they don't see things the way we see them all the time doesn't mean we can't work together.

You simply want to push them as the big bad guy

We can't be friends because Western Europe and Russia's interests are polar opposites. The only thing Russia has going for it economically is its ability to control the flow of natural gas into Western Europe. It's no secret that Russia wants to control the west. Europe wants to be able to get its energy without having to deal with Russia.

We are like that friend who's caught in the middle of a spat between two friends, leaving us to have to pick sides. We chose Western Europe. As long as we are looking out for Western Europe in their rivalry with Russia, we cannot, in good faith, be Russia's friend.

If we aren't at odds with Russia what will the defense contractors on both sides do?
Defense contractors support these candidates for a reason.
Who else will buy a $1200 hammer from them?

Yeah I suppose "friends" was the wrong word to use. Acquaintances is more like it. Fact is Russia can handle things in ways we can't. We need Russia to do our dirty work at times. Keep them complacent and you can nudge them to do your bidding.

We're going in the opposite direction we need to go in terms of our relationship with Russia. We don't have to be buddy buddy, but pissing them off and slinging shite at them isn't the thing we need to do.

Eh, by this logic you're saying the US can't have good relations with most countries for that matter

Good...now that this is settled let's stop pushing democracy in other places

You mean Crimea, which has been under Russian control pretty much constantly since the 1700s?

I don't trust Russia. We can be friends and not trust them. No reason not to be cordial but we shouldn't forget Putin is extremely dangerous and power hungry.

They can be a huge asset to us. Like I said, we're the "good guys" we don't play dirty. Russia, on the other hand, has zero qualms playing dirty. Keep them happy, and we can nudge them into doing our bidding. Being on good terms with the US is a huge plus to the Russians. And it gives us another world power to do our dirty work, and take the heat for it. Would you rather send Americans to die in the middle east, or send Russians to die in the middle east?

Pushing Democracy in other places is in our national interest. You just have to be judicious in when and where and how you do it.

Why can't we be friends with Russia
Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I seen ya around for a long long time
I really remember you when you drank my wine

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I'd seen ya walking down in Chinatown
I called ya but you could not look around

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I pay my money to the welfare line
I see ya standing in it every time

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

The color of your skin don't matter to me
As long as we can live in harmony

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I'd kinda' like to be the president
So I could show you how your money's spent

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

Sometimes I don't speak right
But yet I know what I'm talking about

Why can't we be friends
Why can't we be friends

I know you're working for the CIA
They wouldn't have you in the mafia

After the Soviet Union fell, Russia lasted around 9 years until they elected Putin and his autocratic leadership - or, rather, until he took over. It was an aberration. They have no real democratic history or history of free society or institutions. They are not allied with American or Western thought. They are of the East and are an autocratic culture and society and will always be that way, unless there is some kind of fundamental culture change that happens.

I do not believe this to be true. I think at the end drunk Yeltsin was appointing Prime Ministers left and right and it simply happened that the arrow stopped on Putin when Yeltsin expired.

I think Russia could and would be a far different, more democratic and more open place had, say, Khrishenko had been in power.

Quite honestly I think this is one of the biggest missed opportunities in history - to replace Putin with Khrishchenko.

The unfortunate Russian people would be so much better off and Russia would not be playing games abroad.

The Democrats were maneuvering for war with Russia a long time before DJT was elected.

There have been anti-Russian themes running through our popular culture for nearly a decade now.

Soros and the globalists hate Russia, so we're supposed to hate them, too. Putin is an Orthodox Christian, and churches are being built in Russia like at no time in their history.

We're the anti-Christian, pro-gay, pro-Feminist nation.

Before you turn Russia into some sort of Christianland ala the Vatican remember.

1. Russian Orthodoxy is a very odd bird among Christian religions, really mystical and not at all like Protestantism. I dunno how many Methodists and Bapists and Lutherans would feel in a Russian Orthodox church, I think many would get the creeps.

2. Islam is one of the official religions of Russia.
