Because healthcare for all was a step up from most had prior. For the US, it would be a step back in healthcare.

Plus, what so many fail to realize is that our for-profit hospitals are not set up for healthcare for all. Sometimes it is easier to build new than to have to destroy a current system and rebuild.

That's what people don't realize. When you are in a US hospital, you sit in this fancy room all by yourself with nurses available and checking on you often.

In many of those "1st world countries", you sit in large rooms separated by curtains where nurses check every 8 hours to make sure you aren't dead.

Call it a right. Call it a privilege. Call it whatever. Makes no difference to me.

I thank you for your service. You have no right to medical care.

You are granted this privilege.

Our society cannot distinguish the difference any longer and why this is important.

You will still pay 300 a month, but instead of to an insurance company, it will be towards the commonwealth of all Americans. And if you ever had to go to the hospital or doctor or dentist, there would be no co-pay

They will never understand this point.
My personal favorite way this point has been expressed comes from a canadian supreme court ruling.

Access to a waiting list is not access to healthcare

Unless you massively increase the supply of docs, clinics, nurses, hospitals, etc, you aren't going to be able to guarantee healthcare anytime for anyone who wants it.

Several reasons:

1. Those “other” places have much smaller populations. Next nearest 1st world country in population to us is Japan and they have only 38% the population we have.
2. They don’t have the standard of care we have. Not even close.
3. They tax the everloving shite out of their populace.
4. Specialty care is a luxury. Waiting lists for specialized care are astronomical.
5. Americans are fat arse slobs that expect magic medicine to save them from themselves.
6. The standard of living in other countries is below ours.

the fact of the matter is that americans who choose to have high deductible plans because they don't use much care are frickED by a single payer system. They will almost certainly be net losers under single payer.

I have never been to a european hospitals, but I have had medical friends make comments before the differences.

Private rooms aren't as common in european hospitals, nor are monitoring machines. You also get less visits by a nurse.

You say this, but there will never come a time when I am denied care. In fact, I believe there are "laws" on the books guaranteeing that to me.

So I mean, we could quibble over definitions, but like I said, it simply makes no difference to me personally.

But would I like to see a better system? You're damn straight I would.

The biggest problem we have in this country is actually mental health related stuff. We are sorely lacking in this regard and it is a problem that does hit close to home for me. So I would like to see something better.

But at the same time, I do realize what we have is among the best in the entire world and you can't really stare a gift horse in the mouth too much.

You realize the only place IN THE WORLD that doesn't have copays is the UK right?

Copays, or some other form of cost sharing, are vital to ensure health resources are efficiently allocated to those who need them most.

What's sad is this is really how insurance is designed to work.

I used to feel bad for idiots who couldn't manage their own personal finance and insurance needs. Then I learned that I, who could do a better job than the one-size-fits-all solutions put out by the government, am the bad guy and need to (at the barrel of a gun) help the idiots at the expense of my own totally manageable affairs.

I am not denigrating you. Please realize that this is not "quibbling" or "semantics"

Denoting a "right" has massive connotations. You have just granted yourself the right to enslave another citizen, to force their labor in your service, and to compel your neighbors to pay for a new service through taxation.

You need to know that for which you advocate.

Or is it just more "give me"?

Here is the issue^^^. You think Govt healthcare will allow me to receive the same care I get today, for $300/ mo with no out of pocket costs? And that covers not only me, but the "commonwealth of all Americans". This is so financially ignorant it's hard to believe anyone could believe such nonsense.

You build that system and I'll sign up in a NY second. You'll be famous! Like go down in history famous.

Anecdotal, my wife is a type 1 diabetic. If I lose my job, she dies. No joke, her once a day injection plus her vial in case her level goes high is $450 a month without insurance. We pay $150 for it. It's free or less than $10 everywhere else in the first world.

I'm sorry, but this is fricking nonsense. I've already paid for my care...for life...and I paid for it with my life in service to this nation.

It's not about "give me" anything. What you're saying is fricking insulting.
