So what are you telling the people that live in apartments and drive 1000 dollar cars? Someone buying new vehicles and houses looks “rich” to them. What is your fair share?

Public libraries exist because?

Public schools are terrible at the job they’re intended to do. We pay more per student than any other country on earth, yet we are continually falling behind.

Why put any trust into anything the government does?

You miss the point. Leftists never tell you what they want to do, especialy if it a radical change. They ease you into it gradually. Full socialism/communism is the end game.

Having an educated and literate population sort of goes hand in hand with being a first-world country. Questioning the existence of public libraries is worthy of being mocked. For example: “How uneducated and illiterate do you have to be to question the very existence of public libraries?”

Maybe 20 years ago. You don’t need a building to house books anymore.

The thing is, books take up a lot of room. One computer can replace damn near an entire library’s book collection. Libraries are antiquated and unnecessary today.

You have a cellphone. That cellphone has access to more information than any library on earth.

A) what are we to do with them? Leave them outside now?

B) Guess what you have online access to without having to go to a building?

ETA: If i didn’t know any better, MAGAe want to get rid of *checks notes* public libraries.

About as uneducated and illiterate as those who question google books, or other private-free sources, as free upgrades.

Our library has reduced hours of operation because they have too many "highly educated" librarians and not enough usage.

I think they are putting the entire library in digital form as well.

The library downtown has too many bums sleeping and stinking up the joint and the books just sit collecting dust. Beautiful new building though.

Anybody here doing that?

Glad you brought this up because it only lends itself to the pile of reasons to mock anyone who thinks public libraries shouldn’t exist. Much intellectual property is owned by the public. That alone warrants the existence of, oh, I don’t know, a place to store it?

I’m unclear of the argument you’re making.

Here’s the app the Saint Louis County library system uses.

LINK

I don’t go to the library anymore. I still read books “from” the library.

Yes!
That is why it was noted.

Not a matter of whether "public libraries" should exist at all. That's an obvious strawman. The question was whether there could be private alternatives. There could be, and there are.

My sister in law in Tennessee had to go to a charity hospital in Tennessee last year for a Gall bladder surgery. They did not correctly close all the ducts and such and she had bleeding and some kind of bile dump into her body cavity for over a year. She is on a vent right now septic and not expected to live. The family can’t sue because they waved that right to be treated by the State. This is what government run healthcare is. This is it. This is what you idiot democrat socialist want. The government does nothing but military good. The DMV sucks. The IRS sucks. The government is corrupt and full of union civil servants idiots and the most worthless amongst us. The government does nothing well but kill and destroy and indoctrinate our kids in public schools. The government should be cut to less than one quarter of what it is. You can not be free and have a strong government. Government is never good or the correct answer. My sister in law was killed by government doctors. Tell her kids how great the government is.
