This is to replace eleven term congressman Michael Burgess. (thank God, as he had become really entrenched in RINO policies and voted against the interest of the district numerous times in the last two years). Here is the district map:

This article in the Texas Tribune describes the two main candidates:

Brandon Gill
quote:

made a name for himself in politics by marketing the election conspiracy theory documentary “2000 Mules” with his father-in-law Dinesh D’Souza.
President Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida have endorsed him, but...
quote:

Gill grew up on a cattle ranch outside Abilene — a city about two hours from the North Texas district. He moved to the district about a year before Burgess announced his retirement
Moving to a district for the purpose of running for Congress does not sit well with a lot of Texans who might see that as "insider knowledge" from Burgess, who once was popular here, but lost his luster the last few years and likely didn't want to face the calls from conservatives to oust him. Gill might be viewed as a carpetbagger politician by some. However, in his favor,
quote:

Gill previously ran a right-wing news website, the DC Enquirer, where he was “going to bat for President Trump in the public square,” he said. The website, which still bears his name, said Gill stepped back from its editorial content to run for office.
John Huffman
quote:

In 2020 and 2021, Southlake was at the epicenter of debates over diversity and inclusion efforts in public schools after administrators attempted to address racism in its curriculum through a proposed “Cultural Competence Action Plan.” The plan was a response to a 2018 clip showing Southlake teens chanting the N-word, and it came at a time of a national reckoning over racism that followed the murder of George Floyd by a police officer.

The plan faced fierce backlash among parents, with accusations that it was introducing critical race theory into public schools

As mayor, Huffman fought to overturn the plan and to replace members of the school board with more like-minded members. He was a founding donor to Southlake Families, a political action committee that supported conservative candidates for the board. Candidates against the plan eventually won a majority in the school board and banned additional diversity and LGBTQ initiatives in the district.

Huffman hopes to do the same at the federal level, including the military and the Department of Education, where he views diversity initiatives as a waste of money.
It's nice to have good choices, but Gill's inclusion in the race seems a little like payback by nationally prominent Republicans rather than ground-root Texans. I could be wrong, but I'm intent on voting against Cruz in his next election, so his endorsement is, at least for me, not helping Gill. Cruz has recently shown who he is with his votes on Ukraine.

I think you are smart to look at Cruz that way. He is so cunning and intelligent that he hides his true rino nature well. But that dude is an ivy league swamp rat. He just isn't liked by his fellow swamp rats.

What has Gill done professionally for a career. Has he made an income not tied to politics? Serious question. That’s one way I look at candidates, even if they spout everything I theoretically agree with.

I understand voting against Cruz in the closed GOP Primary, but he will likely win that primary (if he runs for Senate re-election). You going to vote against him in the runoff vs some Democrat like the Mayor of San Antonio?

Better to go with the devil we know than the one we don't. No, will not vote for Cruz in the GOP primary.

I would think Gill growing up on a cattle ranch near Abilene wouldn’t be so bad. It’s not like he moved from out of state; he’s a bona fide Texan. But you are more in tune with what people in your area might think.

Huffman sounds like a culture warrior, like that is what defines him. I would check more into his record as mayor.

I’m not sure what your top priorities are but Republicans need to elect better people that are fearless. They need to elect people that will demand border security and not agree to tie it to a $100B foreign war handout. They need to elect people that will demand accountability from the CIA and FBI. They need to elect people that will cut off the neverending funding of foreign wars.

I would look deeper into how these candidates might vote on those issues by examining their records and histories (statements, activities, etc). Moreover, who funds them is critical.

Yeah, Cruz reminds me of Louis in that series, Suits.

Yeah, he's "in the club" (like Cruz), but nobody likes him o wants anything to do with him....until they need something from him.

I get it. The resume is good, but, that guy in Southlake, man, now, THAT guy is a fighter and said, (in political speech), "frick your DEI and Critical Race Theory" to the communists and then kicked their asses right outta' there. The guy was relentless.

This is why I'm asking the question because I'll admit, it's an embarrassment of riches having two men with bonifides, but both different in equal ways.

I almost wish that Gill had settled on a different district, but congressmen don't just up and retire too often, so I understand that's why they're running. Shame that one of these two is going to lose, and that's too bad.

We need both. Looks like Gill represents the wave of Republican leaders that made a splash between 2010 and now. But Huffman represents the The Boots on The Ground Base that's taking actual actions when the policies of The Left work against reason, morals and community.

I don't want to penalize either man, so this is actually a deeper decision for me than you suggest. I just hope there are many more like me who will pay very close attention to this race.

So your options are a Trump media fanboy with no experience, or someone who has actually used his leadership and position to create conservative victories.

This seems like an easy choice to me.

Possibly so. I don't see it so black and white. Yet.
