My dad has told me how he and his brothers and sisters did this all day on Saturday, just to earn enough money to go the matinee the next Saturday. This was in the 1950s. He's a retired, 3rd generation coal miner and has a carbide lantern his grandfather used every day at work. My grandfather died and still had "company script" he was paid for his labor.

As a kid, you are asked what you want to be when you grow up. Me and my brother, just like a whole lot of sons that admire their dad, were quickly corrected if we said "coal miner like dad". My dad said he would do everything he could to keep me and my brother from ever seeing the bottom of a coal shaft. He did what he had to, to provide, but wanted much better for us.

I built a log cabin with my dad. We cut down our own trees to build it. We built the fence and gates from our own trees.

My grandfather died on a construction site on an Easter Sunday working overtime.

My brother and I ran a roofing and sheet metal business with 15 employees doing tear offs and new construction.

I worked doing demolition and new construction in college.

I have family that were farmers.
