I seen this word several times in this thread. A meteor COULD hit the earth. My gosh. So, tell me this, if we don't stop China and their trade practices now at what point do we? If we are going to let them manufacture everything because we want cheap stuff, how will Americans have jobs to buy all this cheap Chinese crap y'all want?

Your exaggerations of the effects of tariffs is pathetic. The American consumer paying a little extra for a washing machine or car or any of that bullshite for a temporary period of time is not "cutting off your dick"

All the news media is talking about how much grain prices are falling but if Obama was in office they would be talking about how much food prices have decreased. Grocery stores will practicaly be giving away food with these falling prices of inputs.

Once the gubment implements taxes you think they’ll just roll them back? I wonder how long needs to go by with them saying hold out just a little longer, they’re about to break I can feel it! No, consumers get used to the tax increase and it just becomes part of life. The workers laid off are an unfortunate casualty. And maybe something big happens to take our attention off of it. Maybe war drums start beating and the US (and our ally!) is in imminent danger, somebody might find some yellowcake perhaps.

Universal basic income duh!! These "free market absolutists" want open borders too...with no stipulations for government assistance.

Some of us are a little more pragmatic than "free market or bust."

Except that this is exactly the position you’re taking - or maybe we should call it “fair trade or bust”. Cutting off the nose to spite the face is not pragmatism.

A pragmatic stance would be to avoid playing a game of chicken with the global economy in the name of lower tariffs, despite the fact that the unbalanced tariffs with our trading partners undermine the free market. Why? Because the battle could cause more economic harm than good, even if we do win. It takes the wheels of our economy a hell of a lot longer to get up to speed than it does for them to stop.

The unfortunate fact is that as long as there are places with standards of living lower than our own, there will be folks willing to work for much less money than US citizens. And as long as there are folks in other countries willing to work for much less than US citizens, we will be at a manufacturing disadvantage.

Tariffs are already causing pretty significant fluctuations in material costs. These fluctuations are already causing many corporations to re-evaluate capital expenditures. In the industrial sector, it’s like a dark cloud is hanging over everyone. Which is ironic because these are the types of jobs that we are supposedly trying to bring back.

And this is all (mostly) due to the steel tariffs, which really don’t even have much to do with China. If we go through with the additional tariffs on $500b worth of Chinese goods it’ll hit consumers directly, which will further stifle investment. I guess it’d be great for the deficit though, so there’s that...

I hope I’m wrong and China folds. But I also hope everyone understands how high the stakes are here.

These tariffs, more than any other activity of the President in his first 18 months, firmly stamps him as an economic illiterate. And what's worse, it's conservatives and conservative Republican districts which are being disproportionately impacted.

Of course once Trump gets a trade deal that is favorable.

Not long, China and the EU would buckle quickly in a trade war with the US. We have all the leverage. The only leverage they have is idiots like you misrepresenting what the President is actually doing.

The economy at the time was pathetic. You want that again?

Tariffs are the governments way of punishing their own people because someone is mad at another country.
