I think the OP is trying to figure out if his BS detector should be going off because media has lied to us so many times. Yes, there was the german girl but we are told that over 100 people have been kidnapped which is wild.
Logistically it makes sense to kidnap people in order to lessen the likelihood that you get erased from the map but this day and age we need to see things in order to believe it, unfortunately.
