I was browsing headlines this morning and ran across this Pew report which is the most extensive polling concerning religious attitudes that I've seen in quite some time.

LINK /

Because I see so many references on this board concerning demographics of religion and how it affects politics, I figured some here would find it interesting.

While I think everyone should read the Pew link (or at least scroll through and see all of their graphics), this is a condensed version from Christianity Today: LINK

ETA: For those scrolling quickly, make sure to notice that there are five pages to the Pew report. The buttons are at the bottom of the page.

This should not surprise anyone... The "world" has been manipulating God to fit their personal views for quite some time... Not really surprising to me...

When I say it it means that I have a personal relationship with my savior Jesus Christ. It also means that I believe God sent his son to Earth to die for our sins on the cross. A gift we are not worthy of.

The most interesting thing to me is the similarity of numbers between Evangelicals and historically black Christian churches (literally the last two batches of Christians in the West who believe wholeheartedly in "God as described in the Bible").

Yet they couldn't have more starkly different political and world views if they tried.

Most Christians are actually Moral Therapeutic Deists.

Beliefs:

A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.
God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.
The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
Good people go to heaven when they die.

All of which is untrue.

Why not? What is so inherently bad about the human race?

Oh for heaven's sake...

Look, can we, for once, have a thread about religion as it affects politics without actually having a theological debate?

as someone that was raised protestant, I find it really odd that almost 40% of Catholics do not believe "God" is all powerful

To believe is to accept without evidence. This is the bane of humanity.

We need to get back to our Reformed roots. Too many Christians today are wanting to make God in our own image and pick and choose the parts of the Bible we want to agree with.

It's always interesting to see the political breakdown of these polls, too. Less than half of Democrats believe in a God as the Bible describes, which makes sense. Many of them believe the government is their God.

Reminds me of a quote from Xenophanes, ancient Greek philosopher:

quote:

"The Ethiopians claim that their gods are flat-nosed and black-skinned; the Thracians, that they are blue-eyed and have red hair...if oxen, horses, and lions had hands with which to draw and make works like men, horses would represent the gods in the likeness of a horse, oxen in that of an ox, and each one would make for them a body like the one he himself possessed."

I've been gravitating more toward the concept of God, or spirituality minus religion for a while. I would guess most people fit into this category even if they consider themselves of a particular denomination.

Each denomination is different.

That difference is controlled by the part of the Bible that particular denomination ignores.
