Reagan was the perfect man for the job at the time. He inspired us and he was able to assure us we were strong.

Also, you're taking his quote sort of out of context here. When he said this, it was his belief that the incident he was speaking about was done with a fully automatic AK-47. So here, those are what he is talking about. He was incorrect, it was done with a semi-automatic one.

Anybody who has not watched or read "A Time For Choosing" misses the very essence of conservatism. It is the I Ching, IMHO, and should be right up there with the Gettysburg Address, FDR's inauguration ("fear itself"), or JFK's inauguration ("what you can do for your country").
