Well i stand corrected, at least regarding the admonition to buy a sword. I do find it peculiar that right after this verse, Peter is admonished for using it. I will have to study it further to determine what i believe the intent to be

I honestly dont think we have a green light to be violent under any condirions.

Peter attacked and intervened right before Jesus was to die for our sins. I think that he was rebuked for his timing more than his defense of Christ. Self-defense is never wrong. Defending the church is never wrong. Waging an active violent campaign is and that is different.

People have screwed that verse up so much. Same as “the meek shall inherit the earth” people take meek to mean weak when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

And same for "do not judge". It been perverted to an extreme. There are many versus telling how to judge.

a tree may be known by its fruit, etc...

It’s easier to ask the lord for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission

The 12 disciples carried swords for a reason.

And he would probably tell you to stand firm against the wicked when they come at you.

They had those swords to protect themselves on the roads. You are fooling yourself if you think they never had to use them violently.

Yeah but to what extent?

Be resolute and speak the truth? Of course.

Get excited over a physical confrontation should BLM protestors want to disrupt services? Not so sure.

Paul said that if “any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy” (I Cor. 3:17).

Why would anyone be excited about that? No one wants their church service disrupted.

Romans 12:18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men

Exactly.

Nothing sinful or unskillful or missing the mark about self-defense. Jesus never told soldiers to abandon their posts.

Oh come on. A simple read of this thread would confirm that a lot of posters are itching for a fight. Which I understand, actually. Anyone who tells you they haven't thought "Oh I wish some nutjob would try" is lying.

I'm just questioning whether it would be some blessed endeavor for the right reasons, or an earthly/politically-motivated engagement. The latter, I suspect.

Being prepared for confrontation is not the same as seeking it out.

Nehemiah drew the line at anyone trying to stop him rebuilding the wall. He stationed guards ready to fight and kill.

I think we should be patient for the first few times something like that happens but there is a limit. Incrementalism needs to stop.

As a Christian I cannot find anywhere in Scripture when someone is chastised or condemned for defending yourself and/or someone else in a life threatening situation. IMO the scene with Peter and Jesus and the sword is different in the sense that Jesus came to pay for our sins and Jesus knew he was going to be betrayed and Jesus willing submitted himself to this. Peter and the other disciples did not understand that.

The problem in the scenario described is the idea that you are going to start "shooting" people that are not directly engaging in an immediate threat to your life type of behavior. If on the other hand, life threatening behavior is observed, its not going to end well for the "mob" in the Churches I am familiar with.

This is the same thinking this group has as it goes around terrorizing the country. They want to get in some ones grill or beat or shoot and have no response or condemnation period.

It will not always work that way for them.

I pray for my country. All things in prayer and supplication.

That'd be the Christian thing to do.....but the vast majority of folks who attend church in the US would be more concerned with how this impacted them and not their fellow humans obviously in pain and reacting in such a manner. I am with them on this but I don't pretend to be a believer....
