What Was On The Minds of Those 17, 18 and 19-year-old Boys, 75 years ago?

I have often wondered if I would have the courage to storm the beach once that landing craft door opened. I've tried to imagine myself in their place, knowing many of the men I was sitting with, and quite probably myself, faced certain death.
I've heard it said, "Courage isnt being unafraid, it's being scared to death, but looking that fear in the eye, and moving forward regardless." Would I be able to have that courage?
Thank God I've been blessed. I haven't had to know the horrors of war, partly due to the bravery of what those young men did that day. I wonder if the current generation would answer the bell were tyranny to again threaten us. Then, I look at my own government and wonder if tyranny isnt already a threat.
What an ungrateful, spoiled and juvenile country we've become.

I am forever grateful to the men who stormed those beaches. I'm not altogether certain I could have made my legs function at that moment.

Were probably wondering if they were going to die virgins.

Definitely not dying their hair purple, putting on pajamas and masks and punching Nazis that only existed in their deranged minds

I'm sure they were thinking fighting for the future that includes the right for ten year old crossdressers to be able to dance in front of gay adult men.
You think they still would have fought if they had known about the Clown World that was to come?

If it was today’s youth, we would be fricked

If you didn't get cut down as soon as that door dropped, you moved your arse off of that boat as quickly as possible. If lucky, you moved and you kept moving. There was no cover.

The most common prayer of boys in this situation is not to screw up and get their fellow soldiers killed. And that is truly heroic.
I am grateful for all who have braved these situations so that I didn’t have to.

I'll admit it, those young men are everything I am not.
There's a reason they are referred to as the greatest generation. Its because they are.

Only they can say, but I can tell you this. A old family who passed away about 15 years ago landed on either Utah or Omaha Beach I can't remember which one. I remember him talking about about that day and he didn't get into specifics but this one thing has always stuck with me. He said in his unit there were several guys who claimed to be atheist and didn't believe in God. He said as they approached the beach and the door dropped on the landing craft that everyone of them was openly praying to God.
God Bless these men who risked and gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Same. Because one of them would later be an MP at the Nuremberg Trials. And meet his wife there. Who would come to America. And they would have me.

My thoughts exactly.

Yeah you would have. They were scared beyond belief. But they had bigger emotions at work. The army first dehumanizes young men. Then they build the greatest fear of all in them. The fear of looking like a coward in front of guys who will take a bullet for you. And the greatest love of all. For the other dogs in the same trench fighting for each other. This is not a melodramatic bunch of BS. It's real. So yeah you would have rolled right out of there and let it rip.

I’m not sure. But I bet it wasn’t using the proper gender pronoun. God bless those men. God bless

Contemplating the sheer brutality is mind-boggling.

I'm always in AWE of the first 20 minutes of saving private ryan. I remember when the movie came out many of the d-day vets who watched the movie became visibly shaken because the sounds and visuals took them back to that fateful day. They have said that is the most accurate, faithful recreation of what it was like on the beach that day.

Battles like this are why our our enemies abroad knew that in order to defeat us in the future, they would have to divide us as a country.
Fast forward to today, and their work is gleefully being carried out by the Progressive left and their media.

They were tough young men that had largely grown up during the Depression.
A 20 year old getting off of a Higgin’s Boats was 6 when the Depression started. They were forged by hardship.
This is why they are the Greatest Generation.
They grew up hard and became tough and just as they became adults, WW2 appeared and these tough young men were unleashed on an honorable task that would give more meaning to their lives than just that of the hard scrabble, day to day survival they were accustomed to.
