What you seem to be missing is that other countries charge tariffs against American products already and everytime we buy a product made in another country we are taking money and jobs out of the US and shipping them to other countries.

Trump is trying to balance the trade deficit, which results in more manufacturing here, more jobs, and more money.

There are also national security interests involved as if war starts, we are so far behind on manufacturing know how and ability to manufacture we would have a difficult time ramping up for defense. See China cutting off certain products during COVID such as masks and drugs.

Also manufacturing is about to go through a technological revolution with robotics taking over much of the production processes and Trump is trying to keep some of that innovation and know how here instead of it all going to Asia.

Are we not getting equal value in return?

Which we can add value to, sell for a profit?

Trump is certainly very different from Reagan, but I need to introduce you to Barry O and Biden if you want true anti-Reagan.

I'm no fan of any of them, BUT AT LEAST those dems didn't help a legacy KGB officer reconstitute the USSR.

Reagan would be disgusted by Trump. Trump is wiping his arse with Reagan's greatest achievement.

Replace the income tax system with a consumption tax system.

Avoiding taxes will be coupled with avoiding consuming a bunch of crap you don't need and have to put on a credit card.

Actually he is attempting to protect American workers form losing their jobs to slave labor, in foreign countries.
China has Tariffs.
China can burn Coal.
China can build solar panels that are junk, then bribe US Politicians to force us to pay for the crap.

Curious if you believe Obama and Biden /Democratic party were guilty of "Economic Planning" when destroyed the energy production in America.

Nuclear energy was thwarted by Carter. Obama destroyed coal. Biden tried to destroy Fossil Fuel. They all grew wealthy with their deals. Solyndra?
Meanwhile China and India had have the Fossil Plants humming.

You can't fix something that is broken by continuing to do the same things that broke it.

Did that ever cross your mind.

The crooks in Congress and the White House have spent the last 35 years fleecing the American taxpayer to fund their globalist utopia which only involves enriching them and their chosen cronies.

It cannot be fixed without some pain from ripping off the bandaid.

That said, if Congress does not get off of their collective useless asses and pass a package of tax cuts and regulatory reforms, this will end badly.
It will not be Trump's fault if that happens, it will be the worthless fricks in Congress who are quite happy continuing to screw over the producers in order to buy votes from the leeches using said producers' money.

I would think that the country approximating his mix of bankruptcies and successes would be great. He seems to have substantially more than he had when he started.

Today Lutnick says the tariffs are here to stay.

So the strategy is not as a negotiation tactic, but it is protectionism to create more American factories and will presumably remain in place.

That is the explicitly stated goal as of today.
