Every time I think about remotely working in a central/south American country, something like this happens and reminds me that it's probably not worth it.

I know Costa Rica is viewed as a good place to go but at my old job working for the Canadians we had teams of people go down there and it was anything but a place for Westerners. Armed guards, razor wire fencing.. really welcoming stuff.
But the resort areas are kept clean for the money being spent there. So I guess if you want the sanitized version of things you need to stick to those areas. The reality for the country is another thing.

My daughter and SIL live in Cuenca Ecuador. I just got off the phone with them. They are in a secure area, but I urged them to get out of there as soon as possible. She said they are still in touch with the US Consulate and for the time being are told to shelter in place.
