What number determines "mass" shootings?

is there a specific number that determines if it's considered a "mass" shooting or not? NOLA pops about 3-5 shootings/killings per week. just wondering how many at one time justifies the news calling it a "mass".

I had read somewhere that the magic number is three. Since gang-shootings routinely involve three or more, it does artificially inflate claims of a high number of "mass shootings."

gotcha. so, it has to be three at a time for the media to pick it up? i mean........if it's 47 in three months, it don't count right?

The number is important, but the races of the shooter and victims are the biggest criteria.

Data relevance seems to hinge on presentation. It is true that facts are facts, but when you have a public to mislead, any fact can be presented in a way that completely changes perception.

The number doesn’t matter, it’s the race of the shooter that determines that.

It’s not the number, it’s the color of the shooter and the color of the victims. If either one is black, it’s not a mass shooting.

Over 3 if the shooter is non-black.
Over 9 if the shooter is black.
Over 9 if the shooter is black.

Not sure what the "official" answer is, but seems the particular races involved determines how the shooting is defined. Unless its a school shooting involving a "weapon of war".

I was once told 2 or more. Then I started doing some research, and the criteria is all over the place depending on who you talk to. Some say 3 or more and at least 1 has to die, but I don't know what these idiots on the news channels go by.

If 1 person killed 47 people in a month it might make the news.

good point.

depends on race of victims

Depends on who the shooter is.

I heard a reporter on America's First News last week who wrote a big article on it.
He said the official count for 'mass' is 4. Using that number he discovered that 85% of mass shootings in the U.S. over the past 2 years has been black gangs.

Different people/groups use different thresholds, but the most-common seems to be "4 people shot, excluding the perp."
