Political participation is how the majority of Democratic Socialist want to change the USA.
Yes, instead of stealing other's money and labor at the barrel of a gun you just want to pass laws to steal it.
Guess What! You'll get the same outcome as communism...the barrel of a gun.

Democratic socialism is when the people vote to take away their own rights.

Communism: Government owns the means of production and assigns you a wage. The system is enforced by guys with guns and death camps.
Socialism: Large monopolistic and oligopolistic corporations are permitted to own the means of production and are heavily regulated by the government. You negotiate a wage, but government takes every larger chunks of it as you become more productive, effectively assigning you a wage range. The system is enforced by guys with briefcases backed up by guys with guns and prisons.
Democrat Socialism: What socialism is called in the US and EU.

Democratic socialism is just the idea that you have a democracy and can vote for your leaders and socialist policies you want.
Socialism is the nanny state and can exist in different forms. It can be run by an authoritarian Govt or a relatively free Govt. It can go from simply providing a welfare state to providing free basic services to nationalizing industries.
Communism is full Govt control over your life, your well being, your career, and the economy. Nationalizing of all industry, no private property, price controls, etc.

Socialism is no private ownership business wise like you stated. All government.
Communism is no personal property. Similar to what you laid out.
